Turmeric is one of the most studied spices in the world. Its active compound, curcumin, is a polyphenol with notable antioxidant properties — but on its own, curcumin is poorly absorbed by the gut. This is where black pepper comes in: piperine, the compound responsible for its heat, is traditionally combined with turmeric to support absorption. This pairing is not a modern invention: in Ayurveda, turmeric has always been prescribed alongside black pepper or within Trikatu (the three spices), a sign that traditional practitioners identified this synergy empirically millennia ago.

In Sanskrit, turmeric is called Haridra (“the one that improves complexion”) or Kanchani (“golden goddess”). Used for more than 4,000 years in India, it holds a central place in both cuisine and traditional herbal practice. Ayurveda’s founding texts (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita) reference turmeric for comfort of the joints, for digestion (turmeric traditionally supports bile production, aiding fat digestion) and, applied topically or taken internally, for skin radiance. Take 2 to 3 capsules per day with meals that include a little fat (olive oil, avocado, nuts) — curcumin is fat-soluble, and dietary fats further support its absorption. 60 capsules provide 20 to 30 days’ use; a course of 1 to 3 months is suggested, with a week’s break between courses.

Why is black pepper essential alongside turmeric?

Piperine in black pepper is traditionally understood to support curcumin absorption, which is why Ayurveda has always paired the two. Turmeric on its own has limited bioavailability.

Is turmeric in capsules as effective as turmeric used in cooking?

Culinary turmeric (1-2 g in a dish) provides modest amounts of curcumin. Capsules provide a more concentrated, consistent dose. The two uses complement each other: turmeric in everyday cooking, capsules for a more targeted course.
