Curcumin: Bioavailability, Forms and Dosages in 2026

Published on 12/07/26 · Herba Barona, Paris 12

Curcumin, the main polyphenol in turmeric, is one of the most studied natural compounds in the world, with more than 15,000 scientific publications. Yet its low natural bioavailability poses a major challenge: in its raw form, less than 1% of ingested curcumin reaches the bloodstream. In 2026, several technologies solve this problem. At Herba Barona, our specialist shop at 10 rue Théophile Roussel, Paris 12e, we help you understand and choose the form of curcumin best suited to your needs.

Why is curcumin so poorly absorbed?

Curcumin faces three obstacles to absorption: it’s poorly soluble in water (hydrophobic), it’s rapidly metabolised by the liver (first-pass hepatic effect) and it’s poorly absorbed by the intestinal lining. The result: with a classic turmeric powder, even one standardised to 95% curcuminoids, the amount of curcumin that actually reaches target tissues is negligible.

That’s why the supplement industry has developed patented forms that considerably improve this bioavailability. But be careful: not all are equal, and the bioavailability figures on display aren’t always directly comparable.

The main forms of curcumin in 2026

Technology Principle Bioavailability vs standard curcumin Strengths
Curcumin + piperine Piperine inhibits hepatic glucuronidation x20 Simple, economical
Longvida (SLCP) Lipid technology (Solid Lipid Curcumin Particle) x65 (free curcumin) Crosses the blood-brain barrier
NovaSOL Polysorbate 80 micelles x185 (total curcuminoids) Ultra-fast absorption
C3 Complex + BioPerine Standardised extract + piperine x20 The most clinically studied
Meriva (phytosomes) Curcumin-phospholipid complex x29 Good tissue distribution
CurcuWIN Dispersion in a hydrophilic polymer x46 Good overall bioavailability

Longvida: the technology of choice for the brain

Developed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Longvida technology encapsulates curcumin in solid lipid particles (SLCP — Solid Lipid Curcumin Particle). Its key advantage: it’s the only documented form to cross the blood-brain barrier, making it the reference for cognitive applications. Clinical studies have shown promising results on working memory and mood in healthy subjects. This is the technology Dynveo has chosen for its organic curcumin.

Curcumin + piperine: the classic, reimagined

Piperine (black pepper extract) inhibits the UGT enzyme (UDP-glucuronosyltransferase) in the liver and intestine, slowing the elimination of curcumin and multiplying its bioavailability roughly twentyfold. It’s the simplest, most economical approach. However, piperine can irritate the digestive lining in sensitive individuals and interact with certain medications by altering their hepatic metabolism.

Our selection of curcumin in Paris

  • Organic Optimised Curcumin Longvida Dynveo 60 capsules: Longvida technology, organic turmeric, 400 mg per capsule. The reference for a highly bioavailable curcumin that reaches the brain. Our top recommendation.
  • Organic Optimised Curcumin Longvida Dynveo powder 50 g: the same quality in powder form, ideal for adjusting the dose or adding to drinks.

Curcumin and joint comfort

Curcumin is one of the most studied natural compounds for joint comfort. Its antioxidant and inflammation-modulating properties make it a valuable ally for anyone wanting to maintain good mobility. Several randomised clinical trials have shown favourable results on joint comfort and flexibility. The Longvida form, thanks to its good tissue distribution, is particularly well suited to this use.

Curcumin and digestion

Turmeric has traditionally been used in Ayurvedic medicine to support digestion. Curcumin stimulates bile production by the liver (choleretic action) and promotes gallbladder contraction (cholagogue action). It thus contributes to digestive comfort, especially after fatty meals. One caveat: curcumin is not recommended in cases of gallstones, as stimulating bile flow could mobilise a stone.

Curcumin and mental well-being

Research into the link between curcumin and mental well-being is booming. Longvida’s unique ability to cross the blood-brain barrier opens up interesting possibilities. Preliminary studies suggest a positive effect on mood, possibly linked to modulation of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) and antioxidant activity in the brain. These results are encouraging but still need confirmation on a larger scale.

How to take curcumin properly

  • With a meal containing fat: curcumin is fat-soluble. A meal with olive oil, avocado or nuts optimises its absorption.
  • Dosage: 400 to 800 mg of Longvida curcumin per day (1 to 2 capsules). With piperine: 500 to 1,000 mg of curcuminoids per day.
  • Duration: effects on joint comfort generally appear after 4 to 8 weeks of regular intake. For general well-being, a course of at least 3 months is recommended.
  • Precautions: not recommended in cases of gallstones, bile duct obstruction or if you’re taking anticoagulants (curcumin may potentiate their effect). If in doubt, consult your doctor.

Curcumin and synergy with other supplements

Curcumin combines well with other supplements:

  • Omega-3: synergy for joint comfort and inflammation modulation. Omega-3 fats also improve curcumin absorption.
  • Boswellia: another traditional resin, complementary to curcumin for the joints.
  • Ginger: from the same botanical family (Zingiberaceae), ginger has its own compounds (gingerols) that complement curcumin’s action.

Frequently asked questions about curcumin

Is cooking with turmeric enough?

Turmeric powder contains around 3% curcuminoids, with very low bioavailability. To get the equivalent of one capsule of Longvida curcumin, you’d need to eat several dozen grams of turmeric powder. Turmeric in cooking is excellent for flavour and provides antioxidants, but it doesn’t replace targeted supplementation.

Does curcumin stain your teeth?

In capsule form, curcumin never touches your teeth. In powder form, brushing after taking it is enough to avoid any staining.
