Buy Vidanga: traditional Ayurvedic digestive purifier
Ayur-vana’s Vidanga (Embelia ribes), nicknamed “the purifier” in Ayurveda, is one of the oldest plants in Indian pharmacopoeia for cleansing the digestive system. Its small red-to-black berries have been used for millennia in internal purification courses. Available at our Paris shop, with Click & Collect and delivery across France and Europe.
A top-tier purifying plant in Ayurveda
Vidanga (Embelia ribes, Myrsinaceae family) is a climbing vine native to the tropical forests of India, Sri Lanka and South-East Asia; its small peppercorn-like berries are the part used in Ayurvedic herbal medicine. It is mentioned in the foundational Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita, which classes it as the best krimighna (intestinal purifying) plant — one of the few herbs to have retained this top-tier classification through the centuries. Its main active compound is embelin, a natural benzoquinone present at 1–5% in the berries and studied in over 100 scientific publications, alongside quercetin, chorismic acid and astringent tannins.
Traditional uses
In Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, Vidanga falls into several traditional categories: krimighna (intestinal purification, its main traditional indication, typically used at seasonal changes), deepaniya (digestive stimulant, traditionally said to rekindle Agni, the digestive fire), and shodhana (purification, used as a preparatory plant in Panchakarma protocols). Considered ushna (warming) and katu (pungent) in Ayurveda, it is traditionally used to help balance Kapha and Vata, and used sparingly by Pitta constitutions.
Vidanga and Triphala: a classic Ayurvedic purifying duo
Vidanga’s specific purifying action targets the small intestine and colon, while Triphala offers broader digestive comfort and supports regular transit. A classic combined protocol: Vidanga in the morning (2 capsules with breakfast), Triphala in the evening (2 capsules with dinner), for a course of 2–4 weeks. Trikatu and probiotics (to repopulate gut flora after a purifying course) are also traditionally paired with Vidanga.
How to use & precautions
Take 2 capsules a day (800mg) with the main meal. 60 capsules = 1 month. Traditional protocol: a short 15-day targeted course at seasonal changes, or a full 30-day course once or twice a year (ideally spring and autumn), always followed by a mandatory 2–4 week break — Vidanga is not meant for continuous use. Favour a light diet during the course (rice, cooked vegetables, soups), avoiding refined sugar and dairy, and drink plenty of water.
Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If on medical treatment, consult a healthcare professional. Do not use continuously — respect the course/break cycle. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Frequently asked questions
Can Vidanga be taken continuously?
No — it is used in 15–30 day courses, renewable after a 2–4 week break. It is a purifying plant, not a long-term daily supplement.
Should I take probiotics after a Vidanga course?
Yes, this is recommended — repopulating gut flora with quality probiotics after a purifying course helps maintain digestive balance.
