Buy Guggul: the sacred Ayurvedic resin

Guggul by Ayur-vana (Commiphora mukul), 60 capsules, is a precious resin used for more than 3,000 years in Ayurveda, rich in guggulsterones — plant steroids traditionally studied for their relevance to blood lipid metabolism and joint comfort. Available at our Paris shop, with Click & Collect and delivery across France and Europe.

A sacred resin from the Sushruta Samhita

Guggul is an oleo-gum-resin extracted by incising the bark of Commiphora wightii (syn. Commiphora mukul), a small thorny tree from the arid regions of India and Pakistan. This yellow-brown resin hardens in air and releases a characteristic balsamic scent. The Sushruta Samhita, one of Ayurveda’s foundational texts (written more than 2,600 years ago), devotes an entire chapter to Guggul-based preparations, called “guggulu,” including classic formulas such as Yogaraj Guggulu (traditionally for joint comfort and mobility), Kaishore Guggulu (traditionally for blood purification and metabolic balance), and Triphala Guggulu (traditionally for fat metabolism, combining Guggul and Triphala). In these formulas, Guggul resin plays a double role as both an active ingredient and a “yogavahi” — a carrier that is traditionally said to potentiate other plants.

Guggulsterones: from Ayurveda to modern research

Guggul’s main active compounds are guggulsterones E and Z, plant steroids (phytosterols) identified by Indian researchers in the 1960s — a scientific rediscovery that reflected properties described in ancient texts. Guggulsterones have been studied for their interaction with the FXR (Farnesoid X Receptor) nuclear receptor, involved in cholesterol and bile-acid regulation, and are traditionally associated with lipid metabolism support; for their traditional association with thyroid activity, linked to T3 and T4 hormone production, and by extension with basal metabolism and weight management; and, alongside Guggul’s terpene compounds, with joint comfort, via pathways complementary to those of Boswellia. Guggul and its guggulsterones have been the subject of extensive research, making this resin one of the best-documented Ayurvedic plants — though as with any plant offering traditional metabolic support, it should not replace medical treatment for a diagnosed condition.

Who is Guggul traditionally used for?

People wanting to support healthy lipid metabolism as part of a healthy lifestyle — Guggul is not a substitute for medical treatment in cases of diagnosed high cholesterol; joint comfort, where Guggul is traditionally paired with Boswellia and turmeric as one of the pillars of the Ayurvedic joint-support approach; weight management, via its traditional link to thyroid and metabolic activity, often combined with Trimada and Garcinia in Ayurvedic slimming programmes; and Kapha constitutions — in Ayurveda, Guggul is traditionally considered “kapha shamak,” said to reduce excess Kapha (heaviness, retention, congestion).

How to use & precautions

Dose: 2 capsules a day (800 mg) with meals. Suggested course: 6 to 8 weeks, renewable after a 2-week break. 60 capsules = 1 month. Classic Ayurvedic pairings include Triphala (the classic Triphala Guggulu formula for fat metabolism) and Boswellia serrata (the Ayurvedic joint duo of two complementary resins).

Not recommended for pregnant women. Not recommended under lipid-lowering (statin), anticoagulant or thyroid treatment without medical advice, as Guggul may interact with these medicines. This food supplement is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Does Guggul lower cholesterol?

Guggul is traditionally used to support lipid metabolism as part of a healthy lifestyle. It is not a substitute for prescribed medical treatment — consult your doctor if you take statins.

What’s the difference between Guggul and Boswellia?

Both are Ayurvedic resins. Guggul is traditionally associated with lipid metabolism and joint support, while Boswellia mainly targets joint comfort via the 5-LOX pathway. The two are complementary and often combined.

Can Guggul be taken long-term?

Guggul is traditionally used in courses of 6–8 weeks with a break in between, rather than continuously. Consult a healthcare professional for guidance if considering longer use.
