Triphala is a classic Ayurvedic rasayana — a preparation traditionally regarded as regenerating and balancing. Its distinctive character lies in the synergy of its three components, each traditionally credited with complementary properties: Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), the Indian gooseberry, exceptionally rich in natural vitamin C and antioxidants, traditionally considered balancing for the Pitta dosha; Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), a fruit traditionally valued in Ayurveda for its role in supporting the digestive system, traditionally associated with balancing the Kapha dosha; and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), nicknamed the “king of plants” in Tibetan medicine, traditionally linked to balancing the Vata dosha. Triphala holds a central place in the founding texts of Ayurveda, notably the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, which describe it as a versatile rasayana used in a wide range of situations. Indian tradition says Triphala is as essential to the Ayurvedic practitioner as a mother is to her child. In India, millions of people take Triphala daily, in both powder and capsule form; its use has spread widely in the West, where it’s valued as a food supplement contributing to digestive comfort and general wellbeing.
