Haritaki, king of Ayurvedic plants
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) is a large tree native to the forests of India, Nepal and Southeast Asia. Its fruit, a small oval berry with yellow-brown skin, is dried and ground into powder for a traditional use spanning millennia. In Ayurveda, Haritaki is considered one of the most precious plants, nicknamed the “king of plants”, and holds a central place in the Indian pharmacopeia. It’s one of the three pillars of Triphala, alongside Amalaki and Bibhitaki. Each of these berries is traditionally associated with a dosha: Haritaki with balancing Vata, the dosha of movement. French laboratory Ayur-vana offers Haritaki berry as pure powder, imported from India and tested on arrival for heavy metals and pesticides.
Haritaki and digestive comfort
Haritaki is above all recognised for its action on digestive comfort — the reference Ayurvedic plant for supporting healthy digestion and regular elimination. Tradition uses it to support intestinal elimination and transit, to help balance digestive gas and intestinal comfort, to support liver and urinary function, and to contribute to the maintenance of normal blood sugar and cholesterol levels. This comprehensive digestive action explains its place in Triphala, used for millennia for intestinal regularity.
Rich in antioxidants and natural defences
Beyond digestion, Haritaki is a berry particularly rich in antioxidants: tannins, chebulagic acid, gallic acid and polyphenols. These compounds help neutralise the free radicals responsible for cellular ageing. Ayurvedic tradition also uses Haritaki to support the body’s natural defences, particularly at seasonal changes. As a Rasayana (revitalising plant), it is considered a general tonic supporting vitality and longevity.
How to use & precautions
Recommended dose: 1/2 teaspoon per day (2.5 g), diluted in a drink, compote, yoghurt or a little warm water. In Ayurveda, Haritaki is traditionally taken in the evening to support elimination the following morning. The 150 g format covers a generous course. Haritaki powder has a characteristic astringent, bitter taste; diluting it into a smooth preparation (compote, yoghurt) makes it easier to take.
Not a substitute for a varied diet. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If undergoing medical treatment, consult a healthcare professional before use. Keep out of reach of children.
