Buy Shatavari Powder: the traditional Ayurvedic root for women’s wellbeing

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), whose Sanskrit name means “she who possesses a hundred husbands”, is traditionally considered Ayurveda’s foremost feminine rasayana — a tonic for fertility, hormonal balance and feminine vitality used for over 3,000 years. Available at our Paris shop, with Click & Collect and delivery across France and Europe.

A sacred plant in Ayurveda

Shatavari (Asparagusaceae family) is a perennial climbing plant whose fleshy tuberous roots are used in herbal medicine. Classical Ayurvedic texts (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita) place it among the stanya janana (galactagogue plants), vrishya (fertility plants) and rasayana (rejuvenating plants) — traditionally considered the feminine counterpart to ashwagandha. The roots contain steroidal saponins (shatavarins I–IV), isoflavonoids, mucilage and prebiotic oligosaccharides; the shatavarins, the most studied compounds, are structurally close to steroid hormones and are described as mild phytoestrogens.

Traditionally used at every life stage

Shatavari is traditionally recommended at several key stages of a woman’s life: for cycle balance and menstrual comfort; traditionally regarded in Ayurveda as the foremost plant for feminine fertility support; traditionally used to support lactation during breastfeeding (always consult a doctor or midwife before use during pregnancy); and to traditionally help navigate the menopause transition, often paired with chaste tree (vitex). It is also traditionally used by men in Ayurveda, where it is said to nourish tissues deeply and soothe excess Pitta.

Powder (churna): the most traditional form

In Ayurveda, root powder (churna) is considered the most authentic and complete way to take Shatavari, preserving the plant’s full totum — all active compounds in their natural proportions, including water-soluble saponins, nourishing mucilage fibres, isoflavonoids and cell-wall-bound minerals. Dosing is flexible (2.5–5g/day), and the traditional preparation mixes the powder into warm milk with honey and ghee. The 150g jar lasts 30–60 days.

How to use & precautions

Traditional recipe: warm 200ml of milk (dairy or plant-based), add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (2.5–5g) of Shatavari powder, stir in 1 teaspoon of honey once cooled slightly and a touch of ghee, and enjoy warm, morning or evening. Can also be blended into a smoothie or golden milk. A course of 4–8 weeks is typical, renewable.

Not recommended in cases of oestrogen-dependent conditions without medical advice. If pregnant, breastfeeding or on hormonal treatment, consulting a healthcare professional is essential. Store in a cool, dry place away from light.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shatavari suitable during menopause?

This is one of its major traditional uses — Shatavari’s mild phytoestrogens are traditionally used to support a gentle menopause transition. Consult a healthcare professional if you have hormone-dependent conditions.

Powder or capsules — which to choose?

Powder is the traditional, complete (totum) form; capsules are more convenient and tasteless. Both contain the same Ayur-vana Shatavari.

Can Shatavari be combined with other plants?

It is traditionally paired with ashwagandha for a combined hormonal-nervous approach, with raspberry leaf tea, or with magnesium bisglycinate for muscle relaxation during the menstrual cycle.
