Pyrroloquinoline quinone was first identified in 1979 by Japanese researchers. Naturally present in soil, synthesised by certain bacteria, and found in foods like natto, green tea, parsley and kiwi, PQQ acts as a cofactor in essential enzymatic reactions and stands out for its remarkable molecular stability. This formula uses BioPQQ, the patented form developed by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company and the most extensively studied PQQ available.

Mitochondria produce over 90% of cellular energy as ATP — an adult produces and consumes roughly their own body weight in ATP daily. With age and environmental stressors (oxidative stress, pollution, poor diet), mitochondria can become less efficient. PQQ supports cellular energy in two ways: it promotes the biogenesis of new mitochondria, and it helps protect existing mitochondria from oxidative stress, including protecting mitochondrial DNA, which lacks the sophisticated repair mechanisms of nuclear DNA.

The brain uses about 20% of the body’s total energy despite being only 2% of body mass, making it especially sensitive to mitochondrial quality. PQQ is studied for its potential to support cognitive function via mitochondrial biogenesis in brain cells, its antioxidant protection of nerve cells, and its role in modulating nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein essential to neuron growth and survival. PQQ’s redox cycling capacity is estimated at around 5,000 times that of vitamin C, meaning a single PQQ molecule can neutralise thousands of free radicals before being depleted.

Take 1 capsule a day, ideally with a meal for optimal absorption — breakfast or lunch is generally recommended. PQQ pairs particularly well with Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): PQQ promotes new mitochondria while CoQ10 supports existing ones, a combination often recommended together. One bottle of 30 capsules covers a month at 1 capsule a day.
