The molecule behind 95% of your energy
CoQ10 is a fat-soluble molecule in every cell, essential to the mitochondrial respiratory chain that generates roughly 95% of the body’s ATP. The heart, liver, kidneys, brain and muscles — the most energy-demanding organs — contain the highest CoQ10 concentrations. In its reduced form (ubiquinol) it also acts as a powerful lipid antioxidant, protecting cell membranes and LDL lipoproteins from oxidation.
Why levels decline with age
The body’s own CoQ10 production, via the mevalonate pathway (shared with cholesterol synthesis), peaks around age 20–25 and then declines — down about 30% by 40, and 50% in the heart by 60. Statins, which block the same mevalonate pathway to lower cholesterol, further reduce CoQ10 levels by an additional 30–50% in people taking them.
Why 200mg, and why ubiquinone
At 200 mg per capsule, this dose aligns with clinical study ranges (100–300 mg/day) — many market CoQ10 products are dosed at just 30–100 mg, often insufficient to offset a significant deficit. The ubiquinone form, produced by natural yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) fermentation, is bioidentical to human CoQ10, stable in storage and converted to ubiquinol by the body as needed. For people over 50 or on statins, ubiquinol (already-reduced) may be preferable, as conversion capacity declines with age.
How to use & precautions
Take 1 capsule (200 mg) a day with a fat-containing meal, since CoQ10 is fat-soluble. 60 capsules gives a 2-month course; a 3-month course is recommended.
Consult a doctor if on anticoagulant medication, and tell your doctor if you take statins. Not recommended for pregnant women without medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
CoQ10 or ubiquinol: which should I choose?
Ubiquinone (this product) is the stable, economical form, well suited up to age 50. Ubiquinol, the already-reduced form, is absorbed 3–8 times better and is recommended after 50 or for people on statins. Ask our team in store for advice.
From what age should I take CoQ10?
Endogenous production starts declining from age 30; supplementation becomes relevant from about 35–40, or earlier for athletes and people on statins.
