Ubiquinol is the reduced, bioactive form of Coenzyme Q10. Unlike standard ubiquinone, it is directly usable by the mitochondria without a conversion step — particularly relevant after age 40, when the natural ubiquinone-to-ubiquinol conversion declines. The Now Foods formula uses Kaneka Ubiquinol, the world-reference Japanese raw material (patented fermentation process), encapsulated in an oil-based softgel to maximise absorption. At 200 mg per softgel, it’s one of the highest doses on the market, suited to people on an intensive course or those on statin therapy.

One softgel provides: Ubiquinol (Kaneka Ubiquinol®) 200 mg in a vegetable oil base. Additional ingredients: MCT oil, bovine gelatine (softgel shell), glycerine, purified water, sunflower lecithin, caramel colour. Gluten-free, soy-free, GMO-free. The 60-softgel bottle covers a 2-month course at 1 softgel a day, or 1 month at 2 softgels.

Coenzyme Q10 exists in two forms: ubiquinone (the oxidised form, most common in supplements) and ubiquinol (the reduced, active form). To produce cellular energy (ATP), the body must first convert ubiquinone into ubiquinol — a step that becomes less efficient with age or oxidative stress. Supplementing directly with ubiquinol skips this conversion step, making it the most bioavailable form, particularly useful after age 40-50.

A course of 200 mg ubiquinol per day for 2 to 3 months is often recommended for adults over 40 looking to support their cardiovascular tone and overall energy.

Take 1 softgel per day with a meal (ubiquinol absorption is better with some dietary fat). For an intensive course or alongside statin therapy, the dose can be increased to 2 softgels a day, split into 2 doses. Store in a cool, dry place away from light.

Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or children. Seek medical advice if taking anticoagulants, as ubiquinol may interact with warfarin.

Should ubiquinol be taken morning or evening?

Morning or midday, with a meal containing some fat to maximise absorption. Avoid taking it late in the evening, as ubiquinol supports energy production.

Is ubiquinol suitable while on statins?

Yes, this is one of its main uses. Statins reduce the body’s own CoQ10 synthesis, so supplementation is often recommended — ask your doctor for advice.

How long should a course last?
