Both oils are among the most concentrated natural sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid the body often struggles to make enough of from dietary linoleic acid due to age, stress or diet. Borage oil, from Borago officinalis seeds, reaches up to 25% GLA and is traditionally used to help maintain skin suppleness and hydration, especially dry or mature skin. Evening primrose oil, from Oenothera biennis, is lower in GLA (8–10%) but rich in linoleic acid (~70%) and is traditionally used to support women’s comfort during hormonal fluctuations.

GLA is a precursor of series-1 prostaglandins (PGE1), signalling molecules involved in inflammation regulation, skin hydration, hormonal balance and cardiovascular function. In skin, GLA contributes to ceramides, essential lipids forming the skin barrier — which is why GLA-rich oils are popular for dry, dehydrated or mature skin. These traditional uses are well established, though they are not health claims authorised by European regulators.

Take 2–3 capsules a day with a large glass of water, with meals, to aid fatty-acid absorption alongside other dietary fats. A course of 2–3 months is generally recommended to see initial results, particularly for skin quality, and can be repeated a few times a year, especially at season changes.

Yes — while often associated with women’s comfort, the essential fatty acids benefit everyone, supporting skin quality and tissue suppleness. GLA is not a phytoestrogen and poses no hormonal risk for men.

Can it be combined with omega-3?

Yes, this combination is even recommended — borage and evening primrose provide omega-6 (GLA), while omega-3 (EPA, DHA) typically comes from fish or algae oil, helping balance the modern diet’s often excessive omega-6 intake.
