Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum, formerly Ocimum sanctum) is a tropical basil of the Lamiaceae family. In Sanskrit, Tulsi means the incomparable one. In Ayurvedic tradition, it is classed among the rasayana — plants of longevity and rejuvenation. Three main varieties are distinguished: Rama Tulsi, with green leaves and a mild, slightly peppery taste, the most common variety; Krishna Tulsi, with purple leaves and a stronger, spicier taste; and Vana Tulsi, wild Tulsi with an intense aroma, rich in eugenol. The Ayur-vana Tulsi is a blend of these three varieties, giving it a complete aromatic profile and a richness in active compounds superior to a single variety.

Tulsi contains over 100 identified phytochemical compounds, including eugenol (the major component, 60-70% of the essential oil), rosmarinic acid (an antioxidant polyphenol also found in rosemary), ursolic acid, luteolin and apigenin (protective flavonoids), and ocimumosides A and B (compounds specific to Tulsi, associated with its adaptogenic properties). Tulsi is recognised in traditional herbal medicine for supporting respiratory comfort, natural defences and stress management. It is a gentle adaptogen, suited to daily use as an infusion.

Each batch of Tulsi is certified organic (Ecocert), grown without pesticides or chemical fertilisers, dried at low temperature to preserve essential oils and polyphenols, laboratory-tested for microbiological quality, absence of heavy metals and phytosanitary compliance, and packaged in France in a resealable 100 g bag. The loose leaf format allows you to freely dose your infusion and combine it with other plants according to your needs.

Dosage: 1 to 2 teaspoons of leaves per cup (about 2 to 4 g). Water: just simmering (90-95°C), not boiling, to avoid destroying the volatile compounds. Infusion time: 5 to 10 minutes, covering the cup to retain the essential oils. Frequency: 2 to 3 cups per day. Try combining Tulsi with ginger and honey for a warming winter infusion, with ashwagandha for an anti-stress adaptogen duo, or with lemon and mint for a refreshing summer drink. The taste is slightly peppery, with notes of clove (eugenol) and mint.

Tulsi may slightly thin the blood. Not recommended if on anticoagulant treatment or before surgery. Consult a professional in case of pregnancy.
