Its fruit, the Indian gooseberry, is one of the most concentrated natural sources of vitamin C — phytochemical analysis has found levels around twenty times higher than in an orange, naturally stabilised by the fruit’s tannins and polyphenols. In Ayurvedic tradition, Amalaki is classed among the rasayanas, substances traditionally regarded as regenerating and revitalising. Beyond vitamin C, the fruit naturally contains tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids and other compounds with notable antioxidant properties. Amalaki is also a component of classic Ayurvedic formulations, notably the well-known Triphala, where it’s combined with Bibhitaki and Haritaki.
