The Tibetan “red diamonds”
Goji (Lycium barbarum) is a shrub in the nightshade family whose small, oblong red fruits are nicknamed “red diamonds” in Tibet for their exceptional nutritional value. Tibetan-grown berries differ from lowland-grown ones through higher polysaccharide, carotenoid and trace-element content — a direct result of high-altitude cultivation (over 3,000 m), intense sunshine and mineral-rich volcanic soil. The berries are traditionally sun-dried after harvest, a process that preserves most of their nutrients while giving them a soft texture and concentrated flavour.
Nutritional composition
Tibetan goji berries are remarkably nutrient-dense: distinctive LBP polysaccharides (the subject of extensive research into immune-defence support), carotenoids including zeaxanthin and lutein for eye health, vitamin C, B-group vitamins (B1, B2, B6), beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A), essential minerals (iron, zinc, selenium, calcium, potassium, germanium), and 18 amino acids, including all 8 essential ones the body cannot make on its own.
Tibetan goji vs. intensively farmed Chinese goji
Tibetan berries, harvested at altitude under natural conditions, differ from berries from intensive lowland cultivation (mainly the Ningxia region of China). Tibetan berries are typically smaller, darker in colour and more concentrated in flavour — a reflection of their higher nutrient content. High-altitude growing conditions (intense sunshine, wide temperature swings, mineral soil) drive the plant to produce more secondary metabolites (polysaccharides, carotenoids, flavonoids) as a stress response. The 500 g format is an excellent way to discover these exceptional berries or for regular use over 2–3 weeks.
How to use & precautions
Recommended dose: 20–30 g a day, about a small handful — eaten dried as a snack, added to muesli or breakfast cereal, mixed into yoghurt, blended into a smoothie or salad, or rehydrated for a few minutes in warm water, tea or fruit juice. Also works well in cooking, sweet (cakes, cookies, compotes) or savoury (tagines, rice dishes, soups), or steeped as a lightly sweet, colourful infusion. Store in a cool, dry place in an airtight container, away from light and moisture; well sealed, they keep for several months without significant quality loss.
People on anticoagulant treatment should consult a healthcare professional before regular consumption, as goji can interact with certain anticoagulant medicines. People allergic to nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, aubergines) should exercise caution. Do not exceed 30 g per day. Pregnant women should consult their doctor or midwife before regular consumption, as certain compounds in the berry could stimulate the uterus.
