A milkshake, not just another whey
The difference from a classic whey lies not in the protein source but in the texture it aims for. A standard whey shake gives a thin drink, close to milk. The Protein Milkshake aims for creaminess: a thicker, more velvety drink with real body in the mouth.
This focus on texture changes how the product is positioned. It is not first and foremost a recovery drink gulped down on the way out of the gym; it is a snack. Many of our customers in Paris have it mid-afternoon in place of a teatime treat, or at breakfast when they do not have time to eat.
The protein itself is not whey. It is total milk protein, native: whole milk protein in its natural proportions, roughly four-fifths casein and one-fifth whey protein. That is precisely what creates the texture — casein forms a gel on contact with liquid and is digested slowly.
No added sugar: the nuance to understand
The claim “no added sugar” means that no sugar has been incorporated into the recipe. It does not mean the product contains no sugar at all: the lactose naturally present in the milk fraction provides a small amount, which is normal and has nothing to do with added sugar.
It is a distinction that matters, and it is often a source of confusion. A product can display “no added sugar” while being loaded with artificial sweeteners or glucose syrups presented as ingredients rather than as sugars. Here, there is neither: the Greenwhey range relies on monk fruit for sweetness.
In practice, expect a clear strawberry taste that is only moderately sweet. If you are used to a shop-bought milkshake, your first impression will be of a less sweet product. That is intentional, and it is the trade-off for a short ingredient list.
Nutritional values and format
The 900 g pouch contains 30 servings and provides 23 g of protein per serving. It therefore sits between the organic whey concentrate at 22 g and the native isolate at 25 g.
That is consistent with what it is: a product formulated for texture and enjoyment rather than for maximum protein density.
The 900 g size lasts a month at one serving a day. It is the right size for trying a flavour: enough to form a real opinion, without the risk of ending up with 2.7 kg of a flavour you turn out not to like.
How to prepare it for the right texture
The standard preparation is the same as for the rest of the range: liquid first, then the powder, then shake. But if you really want a milkshake texture, two adjustments make all the difference.
The first is milk rather than water. The fat and protein in milk provide the body and smoothness that water will never give. Whole milk gives the result closest to a milkshake, and a plant-based milk such as oat milk works very well too.
The second is resting time. Leave the drink in the fridge for two to three minutes after mixing: the proteins hydrate and the texture thickens noticeably. Put through a blender with two ice cubes and half a banana, you get something that bears little resemblance to a protein shake.
When to have it during the day
The most relevant use is as a snack. One serving provides 23 g of protein, which keeps you going far better than a typical sugary snack and helps avoid the late-afternoon slump.
It also works very well at breakfast for people who find it hard to eat in the morning: a drink goes down more easily than a solid meal, and morning protein intake is often the most neglected of the day.
For recovery after training, it does the job without any difficulty. However, if that is your main and only use, the organic whey concentrate works out cheaper for an equivalent result. The milkshake is mainly justified by enjoyment and versatility.
Certifications and allergens
A 100% natural formula, with no artificial ingredients, colourings or preservatives. As across the whole Greenwhey range, the packaging is designed to be recyclable and there is no plastic measuring scoop.
The product contains milk, a major allergen. It is not suitable for people allergic to cow’s milk protein. If you are lactose intolerant, the native whey isolate, which is much lower in lactose, is a better choice.
Food supplement, not to be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
Frequently asked questions
How is it different from classic whey?
Essentially, the texture. The milkshake is thicker and creamier, designed as an indulgent snack rather than a recovery drink.
Is the strawberry taste artificial?
No, there are no artificial colourings or flavourings. The taste is subtler and less sweet-shop-like than an industrial milkshake, and the colour stays naturally pale.
Can it be prepared in advance?
Yes, it keeps for a few hours in the fridge in a closed container. The texture even thickens slightly, which is no problem.
Is it suitable for children?
It is not a product formulated for them. A child’s protein needs are normally covered by their diet, and it is best to ask for advice beforehand.
Herba Barona’s tip — make it with milk rather than water and let it rest in the fridge for two minutes: the texture thickens and comes much closer to a real milkshake.
