Glass protein shaker in Paris: the Greenwhey GreenShaker 2.0
A glass protein shaker protected by a silicone sleeve, with a steel mixing ball, that does not hold on to odours.

Why glass rather than plastic
Anyone who has used a plastic shaker knows the problem: after a few months, a smell sets in and never goes away, even after a run through the dishwasher. It is not a question of how well you clean it.
Plastic is a porous material at a microscopic scale. Protein and fat residues lodge in it, and the bacteria that break them down produce the compounds responsible for the smell. Once the material is impregnated, there is no going back.
Glass is a non-porous, chemically inert surface. Nothing gets ingrained in it and nothing migrates from it. A glass shaker forgotten for a week in a gym bag can be rescued with a simple wash — whereas a plastic one generally ends up in the bin. It is the only argument, but on its own it is enough.
The silicone sleeve and the question of breakage
The obvious objection to glass is, of course, fragility. The GreenShaker addresses it with a thick silicone sleeve that wraps around the body of the container and absorbs impacts. It leaves a clear window on the front so you can check the level and the mix.
The sleeve has two secondary advantages. It insulates your hand from the cold or heat of the contents, and it offers a non-slip grip, even with sweaty hands at the end of a session. The lid has a sturdy carry handle, so it can be clipped onto a bag.
Let us be honest: a glass shaker is still heavier than a plastic one, and a fall onto tiles from one and a half metres can break it despite the sleeve. That is the trade-off to accept in exchange for an object that does not absorb odours and lasts for years.
The GreenTornado ball
Mixing is handled by a stainless steel ball in the shape of an open spiral, called the GreenTornado. It works like a whisk: as you shake, the spiral creates turbulence that disperses the powder instead of letting it clump together.
This is particularly useful with additive-free proteins. A whey loaded with lecithin and gums dissolves almost by itself, but it contains precisely what you are trying to avoid. A three-ingredient whey needs a little more mechanical agitation: the ball makes up for exactly that.
Stainless steel does not rust and can be washed without any special care. Just remember to take it out before putting the shaker in the dishwasher, so that it does not get stuck in the basket.
Leak-proofing, care and capacity
The capacity is 600 ml, which leaves plenty of room: a serving of whey is made with 250 ml, and you need free space for shaking to be effective. A shaker filled to the brim mixes nothing.
The lid screws on and provides a leak-proof seal: the shaker can travel lying flat in a bag. Everything is dishwasher-safe, silicone sleeve included.
The only real care tip fits in one sentence: rinse with clean water straight after use. Thirty seconds is enough, and it stops residue from drying and hardening at the bottom. This simple habit extends the life of any shaker, glass or plastic.
BPA-free: what it covers
Bisphenol A is a compound that was used in the manufacture of certain rigid plastics, notably the clear polycarbonates used for years in bottles and shakers. It is now banned in food containers in France.
The difficulty is that a number of manufacturers have replaced it with related bisphenols — S, F, AF — which fall outside the regulations targeting BPA alone while having similar chemical structures. A “BPA-free” label therefore says nothing about these substitutes.
Greenwhey states that its manufacturing is free from BPA and other bisphenols. On a shaker with a glass body, the question only arises for the lid and the sleeve anyway, and the inertness of glass settles most of the issue for the part in prolonged contact with the drink.
Frequently asked questions
Does it break easily?
The silicone sleeve absorbs everyday knocks and falls from a low height. A hard fall onto a tiled floor is still risky: it is glass.
Can I put a hot drink in it?
Glass copes with it better than plastic, but avoid boiling liquid and never seal hot contents airtight: the pressure builds as it cools.
Is it suitable for pre-workout?
Yes, and that is in fact its ideal use. Acidic powders such as the lemon and mint pre-workout leave stubborn smells in plastic, but not in glass.
Is the ball essential?
With additive-free proteins, yes, it really changes the result. Keep it and take it out before the dishwasher.
Herba Barona’s tip — rinse it straight after use: it is dried protein residue, not the material, that causes bad smells in a shaker.
