Sulforaphane is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound found in cruciferous vegetables — broccoli, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts. Broccoli seeds contain up to 20 times more of its precursor, glucoraphanin (also known as sulforaphane glucosinolate, SGS), than mature broccoli heads. Sulforaphane is released from glucoraphanin by the enzyme myrosinase — a conversion step that is essential for the active, bioavailable form to appear. Jarrow Formulas’ Broccomax is designed around exactly this mechanism, pairing a standardised broccoli seed extract with the myrosinase enzyme it needs.

Broccomax capsules use DRcaps, a delayed-release capsule shell designed to protect the active ingredients from stomach acid. The hydroxypropyl methylcellulose shell resists the acidic environment of the stomach and dissolves only in the small intestine, where sulforaphane absorption is highest. This protects the myrosinase and SGS so the enzymatic conversion happens where it counts. Each two-capsule serving provides 35 mg of SGS from a broccoli seed extract standardised to 3.5% SGS, together with myrosinase; the capsule shell also contains maltodextrin and calcium ascorbate.

Antioxidant defences: sulforaphane is a strong activator of the body’s own antioxidant enzymes via the Nrf2 pathway, giving a longer-lasting protective effect than direct-acting antioxidants that work on a one-off basis.
