Sulforaphane is an organosulphur compound from the isothiocyanate family. It’s found in all cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts), but its precursor is most abundant in young broccoli seeds — up to twenty times the concentration found in mature broccoli. This precursor, glucoraphanin, only becomes active when an enzyme, myrosinase, converts it into sulforaphane.

On the plate, this conversion is fragile: cooking destroys myrosinase, and much of the potential is lost. Broccomax solves this problem by delivering both the precursor and the enzyme in the same capsule, ensuring active sulforaphane forms during digestion. This molecule is the subject of numerous scientific publications and features in Bryan Johnson’s Blueprint longevity protocol.

Jarrow Formulas’ signature relies on two innovations. The first is preserving active myrosinase within the broccoli seed extract, setting Broccomax apart from many standardised extracts that only provide the inert precursor. The second is the use of DRcaps, delayed-release vegetable capsules made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. These capsules resist stomach acidity and only open in the small intestine — exactly where the enzymatic reaction needs to happen and where sulforaphane is best absorbed. The vitamin C (as calcium ascorbate) in the formula acts as a catalyst to optimise this transformation.

Sulforaphane works differently from classic antioxidants: rather than directly neutralising a few free radicals, it activates the cellular Nrf2 pathway, which stimulates the body’s own sustained production of protective enzymes — an upstream action that extends the protective effect well beyond the dose itself.

The liver continuously transforms unwanted substances into eliminable metabolites. Sulforaphane supports the phase II enzymes involved in this filtering work — a useful asset in the context of urban Parisian life with its exposure to pollutants. By supporting natural repair mechanisms and healthy cell replication, sulforaphane also contributes to maintaining cellular integrity against everyday oxidative stress.

The Jarrow Formulas recommended dose is 2 delayed-release capsules once a day, with a meal. As sulforaphane is fat-soluble, taking the capsules with a meal containing good fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts) supports absorption. At this rate, the 60-capsule bottle covers exactly one month. If you want a longer course or better value, the 120-capsule Broccomax offers a two-month supply.

What’s the difference between the 60 and 120 capsule formats?

The formula is strictly identical: the same broccoli seed extract, the same 35 mg of sulforaphane glucosinolate per 2-capsule serving. Only the pack size changes — the 60-capsule bottle covers one month, the 120-capsule bottle two months.

Is Broccomax suitable for vegetarians?

Yes. The DRcaps are plant-based (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), and the formula contains no wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, egg or tree nuts.
