Probiotics: How to Choose the Right Strains in 2026

Publié le 12/07/26 · Herba Barona, Paris 12e

Probiotics are among the most sought-after supplements in 2026. But with so many products and claims on the market, how do you find your way around? Which strains should you prioritise depending on your needs? What dosage is actually effective? At Herba Barona, our independent supplement shop at 10 rue Théophile Roussel, Paris 12th, we break down the world of probiotics and help you make the right choice.

What exactly is a probiotic?

According to the WHO definition, probiotics are “live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”. They are mainly lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium) and certain yeasts (Saccharomyces boulardii). Each strain has specific properties: a Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG does not act the same way as a Lactobacillus plantarum.

The human gut microbiota is home to between 500 and 1,000 different bacterial species, weighing roughly 1.5 to 2 kg in total. This ecosystem plays a central role in digestion, vitamin synthesis, immune defence, and even mood regulation via the gut-brain axis.

The main families of probiotic strains

Lactobacillus: guardians of the small intestine

The Lactobacillus genus (recently reclassified into several genera: Lacticaseibacillus, Lactiplantibacillus, Limosilactobacillus, etc.) includes bacteria that produce lactic acid. They mainly colonise the small intestine and help maintain an acidic pH that is unfavourable to pathogens.

  • L. rhamnosus GG: the most studied strain in the world, with more than 1,500 scientific publications. Particularly well documented for digestive comfort.
  • L. plantarum: known for its resistance to gastric acidity and its ability to adhere to the intestinal lining.
  • L. acidophilus: a long-established strain, naturally present in the digestive tract and in fermented foods.
  • L. reuteri: studied for its role in digestive comfort and its production of reuterin, a naturally occurring compound.

Bifidobacterium: specialists of the colon

Bifidobacteria dominate the infant microbiota and remain important throughout life. They mainly colonise the colon and produce short-chain fatty acids (acetate, lactate) that nourish intestinal cells.

  • B. longum: one of the most abundant bifidobacteria in adults, associated with healthy gut function.
  • B. lactis (or B. animalis subsp. lactis): very robust, it withstands gastric transit and storage well.
  • B. breve: studied for its interactions with the gut immune system.

Saccharomyces boulardii: the probiotic yeast

This non-pathogenic yeast, discovered in 1923 by Henri Boulard, is the only widely used yeast-type probiotic. It naturally resists antibiotics (unlike bacteria) and can therefore be taken alongside antibiotic treatment.

How many billion CFU do you actually need?

Use case Recommended dose Number of strains
Daily maintenance 5 to 10 billion CFU/day 4 to 6 strains
After a course of antibiotics 10 to 20 billion CFU/day 6 to 10 strains
Frequent digestive discomfort 15 to 30 billion CFU/day 8 to 12 strains
Intensive protocol 30 to 50 billion CFU/day 10+ strains

Be careful: more isn’t always better. The quality of the strains, their viability (are they still alive by the expiry date?) and their resistance to gastric acidity matter just as much as the CFU count. A probiotic with 10 billion CFU of well-documented, gastro-resistant strains will be more effective than a product boasting 100 billion CFU of fragile ones.

Our probiotics selection in Paris

At Herba Barona, we’ve selected pharmaceutical-grade probiotics:

  • Probio 4 Dynveo, 60 capsules: 4 well-documented strains (L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, B. longum, B. lactis) at 20 billion CFU per capsule. Gastro-resistant DR caps. Our best-seller.
  • Probio 4 Dynveo, 28 capsules: the same Probio 4 in a starter format, ideal for a first try or a short course.
  • Probio Formula Novoma, 60 capsules: a complete multi-strain formula at an accessible price, perfect for a maintenance course.
  • Bifibiol Be-Life, 60 capsules: lactic ferments of Belgian quality, for a change of source.
  • Regulat Pro Bio, 350ml: a different approach — a fermented drink rich in enzymes and bacterial metabolites, to support the gut ecosystem in a complementary way.

How to take probiotics properly

  • Timing: ideally in the morning on an empty stomach, 15 to 30 minutes before breakfast. The stomach is less acidic at that time, which helps the bacteria survive.
  • Course length: at least 1 month to see initial effects, ideally 2 to 3 months for a deeper impact.
  • Storage: some probiotics need to be kept in the fridge. Check the label. Gastro-resistant capsule formulas are generally more stable at room temperature.
  • Supporting diet: prebiotics (fermentable fibres) feed probiotics. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes, garlic, onion and leeks.

Probiotics and prebiotics: what’s the difference?

Probiotics are live microorganisms that you ingest. Prebiotics are non-digestible dietary fibres that feed the good bacteria already present in your gut. The main prebiotics are inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS). The combination of probiotics and prebiotics is called a “synbiotic” and is the most complete approach for supporting the microbiota.

Frequently asked questions about probiotics

Can probiotics cause bloating?

At the start of a course, you may experience some bloating or gas while your microbiota adapts. These effects are usually temporary and disappear within a few days. If symptoms persist beyond a week, reduce the dose or try a different strain combination.

Can you take probiotics continuously?

There is no known contraindication to prolonged probiotic use. However, it’s often recommended to take 2 to 3 month courses with one-month breaks, or to alternate formulas to diversify the strains you’re introducing.

Where can I find quality probiotics in Paris?

At Herba Barona, 10 rue Théophile Roussel, Paris 12th (Ledru-Rollin metro), we offer a carefully curated selection of Dynveo, Novoma and Be-Life probiotics. Our team guides you in choosing the strains best suited to your needs, Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30am-6:30pm.
