Chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris) is one of the most nutrient-dense organisms known: around 60% complete protein with essential amino acids, a record concentration of chlorophyll, highly bioavailable iron, magnesium, zinc and essential fatty acids. It is traditionally used in detox programmes — its cell wall binds certain unwanted elements in the digestive tract, helping their natural elimination.

One of the questions we’re asked most often in-store: chlorella or spirulina? The two complement each other well — Flamant Vert spirulina for protein and phycocyanin, chlorella for chlorophyll and detox.

Build up gradually to 8 capsules a day with a little water or fruit juice, before or with meals. Each vegetable capsule provides 400 mg of pure chlorella — the full daily dose of 8 capsules provides 3.2 g of chlorella. Start with 2 capsules a day for the first week, then increase gradually — the best way to avoid early digestive discomfort. The 180-capsule bottle covers three weeks at full dose, or six weeks at a moderate dose.

Chlorella is generally well tolerated. Mild bloating or nausea can occur early in the course and fade as you increase doses gradually. Chlorella naturally contains sulfites. People on anticoagulant treatment should consult their doctor (chlorella is rich in vitamin K), as should pregnant women. People allergic to algae or iodine should avoid this product.
