CoQ10 and Ubiquinol: Cellular Energy and Anti-Ageing
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a molecule present in every cell of the human body, essential for cellular energy production. As we age, its synthesis gradually declines, making it one of the most sought-after anti-ageing supplements. But should you choose ubiquinone (oxidised CoQ10) or ubiquinol (reduced CoQ10)? Which dosages are effective? At Herba Barona, our specialist shop at 10 rue Théophile Roussel, Paris 12e, we break down this fascinating molecule for you.
What is CoQ10?
Coenzyme Q10, also called ubiquinone (because it is “ubiquitous”, present everywhere in the body), is a fat-soluble compound naturally synthesised by the body. It plays two major roles:
- Energy production (ATP): CoQ10 is an essential link in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It transfers electrons within the mitochondria to produce ATP, the cell’s energy currency. Without CoQ10, there’s no cellular energy.
- Powerful antioxidant: in its reduced form (ubiquinol), CoQ10 protects cell membranes and LDL lipoproteins from oxidation. It’s one of the few fat-soluble antioxidants that the body manufactures itself.
The organs richest in CoQ10 are those that consume the most energy: the heart, liver, kidneys and muscles. That’s why a drop in CoQ10 often shows up as general fatigue, breathlessness on exertion or slower recovery.
CoQ10 (ubiquinone) vs ubiquinol: what’s the difference?
| Criterion | CoQ10 (Ubiquinone) | Ubiquinol |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical form | Oxidised | Reduced (active form) |
| Conversion required | Must be reduced to ubiquinol in the body | Directly usable |
| Bioavailability | Good (with fat) | 2 to 8 times higher |
| Stability | Excellent | Sensitive to oxidation (Kaneka technology) |
| Recommended for | Under 40, prevention | Over 40, higher needs |
| Price | Moderate | Higher |
Under 40: standard CoQ10 is enough
In younger people, the reductase enzyme that converts ubiquinone into ubiquinol works efficiently. A good-quality standard CoQ10, taken with a fatty meal, is absorbed and converted perfectly well. It’s an economical, sensible choice for prevention and maintaining energy levels.
Over 40: ubiquinol takes the lead
From age 40 onwards, the body’s own CoQ10 synthesis declines, and its capacity to convert ubiquinone into ubiquinol also drops. Ubiquinol, already in its reduced, directly usable form, then becomes the more logical choice. Its superior bioavailability produces higher blood levels at lower doses. Kaneka technology, developed in Japan, solved the challenge of stabilising ubiquinol (which is naturally prone to oxidation) with a patented process.
Declining CoQ10 with age: a natural but significant phenomenon
CoQ10 production peaks around age 20–25, then gradually declines. By age 40, the heart contains around 30% less CoQ10 than at 20. By 80, the drop can reach 50–65% depending on the organ. This decline is linked to the reduced energy, increased fatigue and cellular ageing observed as we grow older.
Several factors accelerate this decline: chronic stress, intense physical exercise, certain medications (notably statins, which inhibit the same synthesis pathway as CoQ10) and an unbalanced diet.
CoQ10 and statins: a pairing worth knowing about
Statins (cholesterol-lowering medications) inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is involved in cholesterol synthesis but also in CoQ10 synthesis. Taking statins can reduce CoQ10 levels by 40 to 50%. The muscle pain frequently reported with statins may be partly linked to this CoQ10 depletion. Many cardiologists now recommend CoQ10 supplementation (100 to 200 mg/day) alongside statin therapy — always discuss this with your doctor first.

How to take CoQ10 properly
- Always with a fatty meal: CoQ10 and ubiquinol are fat-soluble. Without dietary fat, absorption is considerably reduced.
- Take it in the morning: CoQ10 stimulates cellular energy production. Taking it in the evening could disrupt sleep in sensitive individuals.
- Long courses: it takes 2 to 4 weeks for tissue CoQ10 levels to rise significantly. Studies show optimal benefits after 3 to 6 months of supplementation.
- Storage: at room temperature, away from light and humidity. Kaneka ubiquinol is stabilised but remains sensitive to oxidation if the bottle is left open for long periods.
Frequently asked questions about CoQ10
Can CoQ10 give you energy the way caffeine does?
No, CoQ10 doesn’t stimulate the central nervous system the way caffeine does. It works at the cellular level by optimising ATP production in the mitochondria. The effect is more subtle but deeper: better baseline energy, easier recovery, less chronic fatigue. Results build up over several weeks.
Is CoQ10 safe long term?
CoQ10 is one of the safest supplements available. Safety studies have used doses of up to 1,200 mg/day for several months without significant adverse effects. It’s a molecule naturally present in the body, which explains its excellent tolerability profile.
