Turmeric, curcumin, Cavacurmin®: what are we talking about?
Turmeric is the orange-yellow root of Curcuma longa, the spice found in curries. Curcumin is its main coloured compound. In kitchen turmeric powder it makes up only a small share: Nutripure puts it at 3 to 4%. To provide a regular, known amount, supplements therefore start from a concentrated extract rather than the whole spice.
Active Curcumine uses a patented ingredient, Cavacurmin®. The starting curcumin is an extract of Curcuma longa purified to 95% curcuminoids, of US origin. It is then combined with gamma-cyclodextrin, a small ring-shaped molecule made of eight glucose units. The resulting complex is called Cavacurmin®: 1000 mg of this complex provide 150 mg of curcumin.
So the label needs a careful read: the 1000 mg refer to the whole complex, the 150 mg to the curcumin itself. It is this second figure that lets you compare with other products; at our shop in Paris, it is always where we start when comparing two curcumins.
Curcumin wrapped in cyclodextrin, with no pepper
Curcumin mixes very poorly with water. Many formulas pair it with black pepper or piperine, others with fats. Nutripure has chosen a different route: gamma-cyclodextrin forms a shell around the curcumin, which makes it dispersible in water. The tub also carries the words “highly bioavailable”.
According to the brand, the bond between the curcumin and the cyclodextrin is made using water only, with no chemical solvent. Once swallowed, the shell is separated by digestive enzymes. The formula contains no pepper, no piperine and no soy lecithin.
The rest of the capsule is simple: a plant-based pullulan shell, maltodextrin, vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid and a touch of sunflower oil (0.8%). No titanium dioxide, no stearate, no colouring. The product is suitable for people following a vegan diet.
What 3 capsules a day provide
The recommended daily dose is 3 capsules. It provides 1000 mg of Cavacurmin®, including 150 mg of curcumin, and 80 mg of vitamin C, i.e. 100% of the reference intakes. The full table, with the ingredient list word for word, is in the Composition tab on this page.
The vitamin C is not there by chance. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage and bones. It also contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress and to the normal function of the immune system. Our antioxidants section brings together other products rich in vitamins and polyphenols.
A 90-capsule tub covers one month at 3 capsules a day. The brand also offers three- and six-month sizes; this page is for the one-month tub.
Who is it for, and in what routine?
Active Curcumine is aimed at adults who wish to make curcumin part of their daily lifestyle. It is often found in the routine of regular athletes, runners, climbers and yoga practitioners, but also among people who, over the years, pay more attention to their ease of movement and mobility.
Curcumin combines readily with other supplements. In our joints and mobility section, you can for example pair it with a collagen, such as Nutripure’s Naticol® marine collagen, or with Arthropure², the brand’s more complete formula. In that case, simply check the total vitamin C provided by the combination.
A supplement replaces neither suitable physical activity, nor sleep, nor a varied diet. It supports a routine that is already in place. If you are unsure whether curcumin makes sense for you, come and see us at our shop in Paris 12th to talk it over.
How to take Active Curcumine
Nutripure recommends 3 capsules a day, swallowed with a large glass of water. Day to day, the simplest is to take them with a meal. On training days, the brand suggests taking them around the session, between one hour before and one hour after.
The brand recommends courses of 4 to 8 weeks, followed by a break of a few weeks before starting again. One tub lasts a month: two tubs therefore cover an eight-week course.
If you have a sensitive stomach, start by taking them in the middle of a meal rather than on an empty stomach. Do not exceed 3 capsules a day: at very high doses, curcumin can cause mild digestive discomfort.
Precautions for use
Active Curcumine is for adults only. It must not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Its use is not recommended for people taking anticoagulants, undergoing anti-cancer or immunosuppressive treatment, or suffering from bile duct disorders, such as gallstones.
Nutripure also passes on a recommendation from ANSES, the French food safety agency, for people with a chronic illness: it is given in full in the Composition tab. More generally, if you are under treatment or have any doubt, ask your doctor for advice before starting.
Like any food supplement, it should be used as part of a healthy lifestyle and does not replace a varied and balanced diet. Keep the tub out of reach of children, tightly closed, in a cool, dry place.
