Strawberry joins Nutripure’s native whey

In Nutripure’s range of isolated whey, strawberry arrived for a simple reason: it is the French public’s favourite fruit, and the brand’s strawberry flavouring, sold separately to flavour the unflavoured version, already had its regulars. Nutripure turned it into a ready-flavoured whey, ready to shake.

The principle is the same as for the other flavours in the range: a native, isolated milk protein, to which a natural flavouring, a little stevia for sweetness and a lactase are added. The resealable kraft pouch weighs 750 g and contains 25 servings of 30 g, with the measuring scoop inside.

Behind the brand are two brothers: Christophe Carrio, five-time world champion in artistic karate and trained in dietetics, and Florent, an engineer. They launched Nutripure in 2017 in Haute-Garonne, near Toulouse, with production in France. We brought their protein powders into our shop in Paris 12th, and strawberry completes the flavours already on the shelf.

A 30 g serving in figures

Two scoops make 30 g of powder. This serving provides 24 g of protein, measured on the product as it comes out of the pouch, for 115 kcal. It contains 2.8 g of carbohydrates, including 1.7 g of sugars that come from the milk: the recipe contains no added sugar. Fat stays low, at 1.4 g per 100 g of powder.

The 86% figure highlighted by Nutripure refers to protein on a dry-matter basis, that is, without counting the water naturally present in the powder. The brand also publishes the amino acid profile of the strawberry version: per 100 g, 64.7 g of amino acids in total, including 43.9 g of essential amino acids, 20.8 g of branched-chain amino acids and 11.1 g of leucine. All of them come from the milk protein, with no added amino acids.

Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass. A whey complements varied meals; it does not replace them. The full table is in the Composition tab on this page.

Native and isolated: where the protein comes from

A whey is called native when its proteins are separated directly from milk, by low-temperature filtration, instead of being recovered from the whey left over after cheese-making. Cold filtration keeps the protein in its original state, without heating it.

“Isolated” refers to the degree of concentration. Nutripure starts from a milk protein concentrated to at least 90% on a dry-matter basis. Adding the flavouring, beetroot powder, stevia and lactase brings the content of the finished product down to 86% on a dry-matter basis, slightly below the unflavoured version.

According to the ingredient list, the milk protein is of EU origin. The recipe is suitable for a vegetarian diet, and the product is developed and manufactured according to the EN 17444 anti-doping standard, useful to know for licensed athletes subject to testing.

What kind of strawberry taste to expect?

The flavour comes from a natural strawberry-flavour flavouring, combined with beetroot powder. Sweetness is provided by steviol glycosides, extracted from stevia; the recipe contains no aspartame, no sucralose and no added sugar. Nutripure readily admits it: natural flavourings without these sweeteners give a more subtle taste than the one people are sometimes used to.

So expect a light strawberry, fresh rather than candy-like. The reviews published on the brand’s website are divided: some rank it among their favourite flavours, others like it less than vanilla. Made with milk, it takes on a rounder strawberries-and-cream note, and that is often how it is most popular.

You can also play with dilution: a little less liquid for a stronger taste, a little more if the stevia seems too noticeable. Like many isolates, the powder foams in the shaker; let it rest for a minute before drinking. Taste remains a personal matter, and it is in fact the question we are asked most often about flavours, at our shop in Paris 12th.

Strawberry, vanilla, chocolate or unflavoured: which Nutripure whey to choose in Paris?

All these versions share the same protein. The unflavoured Whey Isolate Native has no flavouring and no sweetener: it is the richest in protein, and it is low in lactose, with less than 0.2 g per 100 g according to Nutripure. If you digest lactose poorly, that is the one to turn to, not the strawberry.

Among the flavours, vanilla is the easiest to cook with, chocolate recalls a mild cocoa and hazelnut has a toasted note. In this isolated whey, strawberry is the only fruity flavour: it is best drunk chilled and goes naturally with red berries and banana. In terms of composition, the differences between flavours remain small.

For everyday use with no particular sporting goal, the brand also offers Daily Protein, and for those who struggle to eat enough, the Pure Gainer Chocolate adds oats to the protein. The isolates from other brands that we have selected are gathered in our whey isolate section in Paris.

Preparation, moments and red-berry recipes

First pour 200 ml of room-temperature water or plant-based milk into the shaker, add 30 g of whey, then shake. Nutripure recommends 2 scoops (30 g) to 4 scoops (60 g) a day, depending on your needs and the rest of your diet. The 750 g pouch therefore lasts 25 days at one serving a day.

The brand mentions three moments: breakfast, which often lacks protein; the afternoon snack; and after training, when the next meal is still a long way off. To take your serving to the office or the gym, a glass shaker rinses easily and does not keep the smell of the flavouring.

Strawberry lends itself well to fruity preparations. Blend 200 ml of plant-based milk, a banana, a handful of frozen raspberries and a serving of whey: you get a thick smoothie with no added sugar. It also flavours a fromage frais, a bowl of overnight oats or protein pancakes. Just avoid pouring it into a boiling drink, where it forms lumps.

Lactose, allergens and storage

Milk is the main ingredient and the only declared allergen. This strawberry version contains lactose: a lactase, an enzyme involved in breaking down lactose, has been added, but Nutripure states that the product is not suitable for people who are lactose intolerant. It is not suitable either for people with a milk protein allergy.

Traces of gluten, egg, soy, fish and celery are possible, as the facility handles other raw materials. Despite the flavour, there is no fruit in the recipe: the taste comes from the flavouring. If you have an allergy, always rely on the label of the pouch.

Close the zip tightly after each use and keep the pouch dry, always with a dry scoop. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under medical supervision, ask your doctor for advice.

Frequently asked questions

Are there real strawberries in this whey?

No. The taste comes from a natural strawberry-flavour flavouring, combined with beetroot powder. The sweetness comes from stevia.

Is it suitable if I digest lactose poorly?

No, it contains lactose and Nutripure advises against it for people who are lactose intolerant. In that case, the unflavoured Whey Isolate Native, which is low in lactose, is the version to choose.

Does it contain sugar?

No sugar is added. The 1.7 g of sugars per 30 g serving are those naturally present in milk.

Where can I find it in Paris?

It is listed at our shop at 10 rue Théophile Roussel, in Paris 12th, between Ledru-Rollin (line 8) and Bastille metro stations, Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm. Like the whole Nutripure range, it is sold only in store: you can also order it here and collect it at the shop. Its current availability is shown on this page. See also our whey and protein selections.

Herba Barona’s tip — in summer, drop three or four ice cubes into the shaker with the strawberry whey and 200 ml of well-chilled plant-based milk, then shake hard: the drink becomes frothy and icy, like a strawberry milkshake from an ice-cream parlour.
