Why take your citrulline in capsules
Citrulline powder has its fans, but it takes a minimum of organisation: a measuring scoop, a glass or a shaker, a little time to dissolve it. The tub of 180 capsules does away with all that. You open it, count out six capsules, swallow them with water, and that is it.
This format appeals first of all to people who train early in the morning or over their lunch break, and who do not feel like preparing a drink in a changing room. It also suits people who travel often: a few capsules in a pocket box go anywhere, with no powder spilling into the gym bag and no pouch to reseal.
Another advantage is that the amount is always the same. No more or less heaped scoop, no guesswork: every day, the six capsules provide exactly the quantity stated by Nutripure. When you take it regularly over several weeks, that consistency matters.
What is in a capsule
Each capsule contains 775 mg of L-citrulline, the value printed on the tub. The daily intake of six capsules provides 4650 mg of L-citrulline. The rest of the list is short: the capsule shell is made of pullulan, a plant-based material obtained by fermentation, followed by a little calcium citrate, used as a bulking agent, and 0.7% sunflower oil.
There is no flavouring, no sweetener and no colouring, and the citrulline is not combined with malate. Nutripure also states that the formula contains no titanium dioxide, no silicon dioxide and no microcrystalline cellulose.
According to the brand’s traceability sheet, the product contains none of the allergens that must be declared and is suitable for vegans. The tub is guaranteed BPA-free. The detailed table is in the Composition tab on this page.
Kyowa Quality®: where the citrulline comes from
Citrulline is an amino acid that the body produces itself and that serves as the starting point for L-arginine. It is also found in food, mainly in watermelon and melon. For a supplement, the question is how it was made.
Nutripure’s citrulline carries the Kyowa Quality® trademark, registered by the Japanese company Kyowa Hakko Bio, and it is produced in the United States. It is obtained by fermenting a glucose syrup made from non-GMO maize, then purified to a pharmaceutical-grade level of purity. It is therefore entirely plant-based.
The capsules are made in France, in accordance with the EN 17444 anti-doping standard, a useful benchmark for licensed athletes who are tested. Nutripure, founded in 2017 near Toulouse by Christophe Carrio and his brother Florent, publishes the supplier and origin of every ingredient, from the citrulline to the capsule shell.
How to take your six capsules
Nutripure recommends six capsules a day with a glass of water, ideally split into two servings: three in the morning, three in the afternoon or evening. On training days, the brand recommends instead a single serving of six capsules, about an hour before the session.
That hour’s head start is easy to organise: you take your capsules as you leave the office or set off from home, and the session begins when you arrive. For occasional athletes, Nutripure also suggests taking them in the morning on rest days, to keep a regular rhythm.
One tub contains thirty servings, i.e. one month’s supply. Nutripure indicates a recommended period of three to six months. The brand also mentions that it can be combined with BCAAs to vary the amino acids you take during the day; if you prefer to stick with capsules, Nutripure BCAA 2.1.1 capsules, which we also offer in Paris, are taken the same way.
Capsules or powder: which one to choose in Paris?
The same Kyowa Quality® citrulline is available from Nutripure as a 220 g pouch of powder. The difference lies mainly in the way you train. The capsules provide 4650 mg a day with no preparation at all; the powder lets you go higher, since Nutripure recommends 7 g a day dissolved in water.
The brand says so itself: for regular athletes who train several times a week, powder is the recommended format. Capsules are aimed more at occasional training, or at people who refuse to carry a pouch and a scoop around. Nothing stops you from having both, the powder at home and the tub of capsules for when you are away.
If you are looking for a ready-made pre-workout drink, Pure Workout also contains citrulline; in that case, there is no need to add the capsules on the same day. Our citrulline in powder or capsules section brings together the other brands, and you can compare the formats on the spot, in our shop in Paris 12th.
Who it is for, and precautions
These capsules are intended for adult athletes, in strength training as well as in endurance sports, who want to add an amino acid to their routine without changing their habits. They often sit alongside other products sold in capsules, such as Nutripure Creapure® creatine, or in powder form, such as CarnoSyn® beta-alanine. You will find all our amino acids on the website.
Do not exceed six capsules a day and keep the tub out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, ask your doctor for advice before starting. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet.
Keep the tub tightly closed, in a cool, dry place away from light. The best-before date and batch number are printed on the bottom of the tub. For any question about this format, come and see us at the shop in Paris 12th.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take the capsules and the powder on the same day?
There is no point: Nutripure sets a daily intake for each format. Choose one or the other depending on the day, without adding them together.
How long does a tub last?
One month: 180 capsules, i.e. thirty servings of six capsules a day.
Are these capsules suitable for vegans?
Yes. The citrulline is obtained by plant fermentation and the capsule shell is made of pullulan, with no animal gelatine.
Where can I find it in Paris?
At our shop at 10 rue Théophile Roussel, in Paris 12th, two minutes from Ledru-Rollin metro station, Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm. You can also order it here and collect it in store. Current stock is shown on this page.
Herba Barona’s tip — if you split your intake into two servings, slip the three evening capsules into a small pocket pill box in the morning: you do not carry the whole tub around, and you no longer skip the second serving.
