A prebiotic: the fibre that feeds your good bacteria
There is a lot of talk about the microbiota, the billions of bacteria that live in our gut. To stay plentiful and diverse, they need feeding, and their favourite food is precisely the fibre we cannot digest ourselves. That is the definition of a prebiotic: food for your flora, not for you.
Acacia fibre passes through the stomach and small intestine without being digested. It reaches the colon intact, where bacteria ferment it slowly. This fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate, which the cells lining the colon use as fuel. In other words, the fibre feeds the bacteria, and the bacteria in turn feed the gut lining.
For the flora, the usual aim is 10 g a day, taken regularly over several weeks. So a prebiotic is not something to judge after two days: consistency matters far more than the amount on any single day.
Prebiotic or probiotic: what is the difference?
The two words look alike and we are often asked about them in the shop. A probiotic provides live bacteria, very specific strains such as lactobacilli or bifidobacteria, usually in capsules. A prebiotic provides no bacteria at all: it provides food for those already there, and for those you add with a probiotic.
The two approaches complement each other. You can take acacia fibre on its own, to support your own flora day to day, or pair it with a course of probiotics: the fibre then acts as fertile ground for the strains you take. This combination of a prebiotic and a probiotic has a name: a synbiotic.
Several formulas from our probiotics and prebiotics range go well with this pouch: Novoma’s Probio Formula, Dynveo’s Probio 4, or Greenwhey’s Probiotics & Prebiotics, which already combine both families in a single capsule. To choose your strains, our article Probiotics: how to choose the right strains sets out the essentials.
Why acacia is such a gentle fibre
Not all prebiotic fibres ferment at the same speed. Inulin and FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) are fermented quickly, right at the start of the colon, and suit a great many people very well. Acacia gum, on the other hand, has a highly branched structure that bacteria break down little by little, along the whole length of the colon.
In practice, this means gas builds up more gradually, and the vast majority of people tolerate it very well, even in large amounts. It is the fibre we suggest first to people with a sensitive stomach or who are new to prebiotics. It is also compatible with a low-FODMAP diet.
Another advantage: it does not swell or form a gel. Dissolved in a glass of water, it goes unnoticed, with no taste or texture. You do not take it for an overnight effect, but to feed your flora week after week.
The 200 g size: getting started with acacia fibre
The 200 g pouch is designed for a first try. At 10 g a day, it lasts a little under three weeks, and longer during the build-up phase. It is the right size to check that the fibre suits you, or to go alongside a course of probiotics.
One level measuring scoop, supplied in the pouch, provides about 2.6 g of fibre. To start: one scoop a day in the first week, two in the second, then up to four scoops, about 10 g, spread across your meals. Increasing in steps gives your flora time to adapt, even with such a gentle fibre.
The powder dissolves in water, juice, fruit purée, yoghurt or a warm soup. Remember to drink enough throughout the day, as with any fibre intake. If it becomes part of your routine, the 350 g size takes over for regular use, with an identical composition.
Origin, quality and composition
Acacia fibre, also known as gum arabic, comes from the dried sap of certain African acacia species, collected as it flows out naturally or through a light incision in the bark. Used since antiquity, it is now one of the simplest soluble fibres to include in everyday life.
The Dynveo recipe fits on one line: 100% organic acacia fibre. No excipients, no flavourings, no sweeteners, GMO-free. The gum is ground and packed in France, in a resealable pouch with its measuring scoop. The powder dislikes moisture: close the pouch tightly after each use.
It is suitable for vegan and gluten-free diets. In our shop in Paris 12th, we chose it for this simplicity: a single ingredient, a clear origin, and a fibre that the vast majority of our customers tolerate well.
Frequently asked questions
Is acacia fibre a probiotic?
No. It is a prebiotic: it contains no bacteria, it feeds the ones in your gut. You can combine it with a probiotic, which provides live strains.
Can I take it at the same time as a probiotic?
Yes, it is a logical and common combination. The probiotic capsule and the fibre can be taken at the same meal. Our team in Paris 12th will help you choose the formula that suits you.
How long does the 200 g pouch last?
A little under three weeks at 10 g a day, longer during the gradual build-up phase.
What does acacia fibre taste like?
Nothing, or almost nothing. It dissolves without lumps in a cold or warm drink and changes neither the taste nor the texture of a yoghurt or a soup.
