Buy Selenium 100µg: highly bioavailable L-selenomethionine
Selenium 100µg by NOW Foods provides selenium as L-selenomethionine, a highly bioavailable organic form, in a 100-tablet bottle giving over 3 months of use at one tablet a day. Available at our Paris shop, with Click & Collect and delivery across France and Europe.
An underrated essential trace element
Selenium is essential to around 25 selenoproteins with varied functions, including glutathione peroxidase, which protects cells from oxidative stress, and the iodothyronine deiodinases involved in thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium contributes to normal immune function and the maintenance of normal hair and nails. Recommended intake is 55–70 mcg/day for adults, but European soils — particularly French soils — are relatively poor in selenium compared with American soils, often leading to insufficient dietary intake.
Why L-selenomethionine
L-selenomethionine, the pure organic form bound to the amino acid methionine, is absorbed at over 90% by the intestine — versus around 50% for sodium selenite — and follows the same absorption pathways as methionine. Unlike selenised yeast, whose composition can vary batch to batch, pure L-selenomethionine guarantees a constant, reproducible content, and this yeast-free formula also suits people sensitive to yeast.
Dietary sources
Brazil nuts are the richest dietary source (up to 90 mcg per nut, though highly variable), followed by fish and seafood (30–80 mcg per 100g), organ meats, whole grains, eggs and meat. French soils are relatively poor in selenium, which affects plant — and by extension animal — produce, so supplementation can help fill the gap simply and reliably.
How to use & precautions
Take 1 tablet a day with a meal and a glass of water. EFSA sets a safe upper limit of 300 mcg/day for selenium, so account for dietary intake and any other selenium-containing supplements.
Not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet. Store away from heat and direct light. If pregnant, breastfeeding, or under medical treatment, consult a healthcare professional before use.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between selenomethionine and sodium selenite?
Selenomethionine is an organic form bound to methionine, absorbed at over 90% and stored in body proteins. Sodium selenite is inorganic, absorbed at only around 50% and not stored the same way — making selenomethionine the reference form for supplementation.
Is NOW Foods selenium suitable for people sensitive to yeast?
Yes — unlike many selenium supplements that use selenised yeast, this formula contains pure L-selenomethionine with no yeast at all.
