The weak point of most probiotics
A probiotic strain has to reach the gut alive to be of any use, yet stomach acid destroys most of the bacteria swallowed. The billions of CFU on a label are measured at manufacture, not on arrival: an ordinary capsule dissolves in the stomach and releases its contents in the wrong place.
Nutripure chose patented DR Caps® gastro-resistant capsules, designed to open only in the intestine. It is the first thing we check before listing a probiotic in our Paris 12th shop, even before the number of strains.
Six strains deposited at the Institut Pasteur
The formula brings together six strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, for a total of 10 billion CFU per 2 capsules, the daily dose. These two families are the best documented and among the most naturally present in a balanced gut microbiota.
The strains are deposited with the National Collection of Cultures of Microorganisms (CNCM) at the Institut Pasteur: each one is precisely identified, traceable, and cannot be quietly swapped for a cheaper variant. Many labels only give a genus, “lactobacillus”, whereas what matters is the strain itself.
Prebiotics, vitamin B8 and vitamin B12
The “²” in the name comes from the prebiotics. A probiotic provides bacteria; a prebiotic provides what feeds them, and together they form what is called a synbiotic. Here there are two: inulin and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), fibres found in chicory, leeks and onions that our enzymes do not digest but gut bacteria ferment.
Vitamin B8, also called biotin, contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes. Vitamin B12 contributes to the normal function of the immune system. These two claims are authorised in the European Union; no health claim is authorised for the probiotic strains themselves, whatever the available research.
How and when to take them
One to two capsules in the morning with a large glass of water, preferably on an empty stomach, when the stomach is less acidic. The 60-capsule bottle lasts one month at two capsules a day, or two months at one; one month is the usual format.
Typical moments are after a trip, a period when digestion is unsettled, or after a course of antibiotics; while taking antibiotics, leave at least two hours between the two. Mild bloating is possible for the first few days, mainly because of the prebiotics: starting with one capsule lets you go gradually. Vegetable capsule.
Nutripure, your plate and our Paris shop
Nutripure was founded in 2017 by Christophe Carrio, five-time world champion in artistic karate and a qualified dietitian, and his brother Florent, an engineer. The company is based near Toulouse and manufactures in France. Deposited strains and a patented capsule cost more and do not show on the front of the box: that is what convinced us to list the brand in our Paris shop.
Your diet shapes the microbiota all the time: fibre from pulses, vegetables, fruit and whole grains feeds the flora, and fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir and miso bring live bacteria. See also our probiotics and digestion sections.
