Now Foods L-Citrulline Powder in Paris: pure citrulline with no additives at all
NOW Foods L-Citrulline is a pure powder with no other ingredient, in a small 113 g tub. Half a level teaspoon provides 1.5 g of citrulline, which gives about 75 servings. Available in Paris at Herba Barona.
Pure citrulline, and nothing else in the tub
On the label of this small NOW Foods tub, the “other ingredients” line comes down to one word: none. The powder is free-form L-citrulline, with no malate, no flavouring, no sweetener and no anti-caking agent. That is what sets it apart from pre-workout blends, where citrulline is just one ingredient among many.
Citrulline is an amino acid found naturally in watermelon, which gives it its name (citrullus in Latin). It is called non-essential because the body can make it on its own. NOW describes it as an intermediate of the urea cycle, alongside other amino acids. The tub weighs 113 g, about 75 servings: an ideal size to try citrulline powder without committing to a large tub.
Measuring Now L-Citrulline: half a level teaspoon
NOW does not include a scoop. The reference serving is half a level teaspoon, about 1.5 g of powder, which provides 1,500 mg of L-citrulline. The brand recommends taking it once or twice a day, between meals. So you stay between 1.5 g and 3 g a day.
The words “sold by weight, not by volume” appear on the tub: depending on how the powder has settled, the tub may look more or less full when you open it, but it does contain 113 g. For regular servings, weigh your level half-teaspoon once on a kitchen scale accurate to a tenth of a gram. You will then know what your usual spoonful represents, without thinking about it at every serving.
With two servings a day, a tub lasts a little over a month. With one, allow about two and a half months.
Rather pleasant taste, in a glass of water
An unflavoured powder often worries people before the first try. Yet citrulline powder actually tastes rather good: a subtle flavour that is easy to drink in a glass of cool water. It is one of the comments we hear most often in our shop in Paris 12th, after a first tub.
As the powder brings neither sugar nor flavour, it also goes easily into a sports bottle, a fruit juice diluted with water or a training drink. A 1.5 g serving dissolves in a few seconds in 150 to 250 ml of liquid, with a spoon or in a shaker. NOW points out that the colour may vary slightly from one batch to another: this is natural and makes no difference.
Small 113 g tub, large tub or capsules: how to choose in Paris
The 113 g NOW tub is well suited to a first try, or to someone who sticks to 1.5 to 3 g a day. If you take more, or have been taking it for a long time, Doctor’s Best citrulline powder in a 200 g tub is a larger size, measured with a scoop.
Capsules avoid any preparation: NOW offers 750 mg citrulline in capsules, and an L-arginine and L-citrulline duo in vegetable capsules for those who want both amino acids in the same serving. Powder keeps the advantage when you want to adjust your serving to the gram and mix it into a drink.
All these products are gathered in our citrulline powder or capsules section, and you can compare them on the spot in our shop in Paris.
What to combine it with in a sports routine
Citrulline is one of the powders you often come across in athletes’ bags, before a session or in the water bottle. Many of our customers take it with Creapure creatine powder, each in its own serving: one spoonful of each in the same glass of water, and you are done.
To go further, our amino acids section brings together the other powders and capsules of the same kind, and the sport and endurance section gathers everything taken around training. Keep in mind that these powders come in addition to a varied diet and good sleep, not in their place.
