Whey Isolate Chocolate Nutripure in Paris: the native whey that tastes of chocolate

Nutripure’s native whey isolate, with natural cocoa flavouring and sweetened with stevia: 22 g of protein per 30 g serving. Available in Paris at Herba Barona.

Sold in store only. No shipping.

A native whey isolate, the chocolate version

The Chocolate Whey Isolate is based on the same protein as Nutripure’s native whey, to which the brand has added a natural cocoa flavouring and a sweetener of plant origin, stevia. According to Nutripure, the starting idea was to recreate the familiar taste of a hot chocolate in a protein shaker.

The word “native” refers to where the protein comes from: it is extracted directly from milk by gentle filtration, without going through cheese-making or any harsh heat or chemical treatment. The word “isolate” means that most of the fat and part of the lactose have been removed. The result is a fine, protein-rich powder that mixes in a few seconds.

The 750 g kraft pouch contains about 25 servings of 30 g. Chocolate remains the most classic flavour for protein powders: it is pleasant with water and suits people trying whey for the first time. We have added it to the Nutripure range in our shop in Paris 12th, alongside the unflavoured and hazelnut versions.

What a 30 g serving provides

According to the table published by Nutripure, a 30 g serving provides 22 g of protein (as is) for 111 kcal. Fat stays at 0.7 g and carbohydrate at 3.4 g, of which 1.6 g are sugars: these sugars come from the milk, no sugar is added to the recipe.

On a dry matter basis, that is, leaving aside the water naturally present in the powder, the protein content reaches 76.9 g per 100 g. Nutripure also publishes the amino acid profile: per 100 g of powder, 18.6 g of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) and 39.3 g of essential amino acids, including 9.9 g of leucine. These amino acids come from the milk itself; none has been added.

Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass. Protein also contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. These are the only claims we use: chocolate whey is a quality milk protein, to be included in a varied diet.

The full nutrition table, the ingredient list and the amino acid profile are in the Composition tab of this page.

The chocolate taste: cocoa and stevia, no added sugar

The ingredient list is short: whey protein isolate, sunflower lecithin to help it mix, natural cocoa flavouring, steviol glycosides from stevia and lactase. There is no sucralose, no acesulfame, no added sugar and no colouring.

In the mouth, the drink is reminiscent of a mild cocoa rather than a bitter dark chocolate. With water, it stays light and refreshing; with a plant-based milk, it becomes rounder, close to a cold milk chocolate. Among the reviews published by Nutripure, one customer explains that she makes it half water, half oat milk: a good compromise between lightness and indulgence.

If you find the stevia too noticeable, add a little more liquid: the taste becomes milder without losing the cocoa. Like most isolates, the powder can foam in a shaker, especially with plant-based milk; one minute’s rest is enough for the foam to settle.

Chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla or unflavoured: which one to choose?

Nutripure offers its native whey isolate in several versions. The unflavoured Native Whey Isolate has no flavouring and no sweetener; it has the highest protein content and contains less than 0.2 g of lactose per 100 g. This is the one to choose if you do not digest lactose well or if you want a tasteless powder for cooking.

The flavoured versions, including the chocolate and the Hazelnut Whey Isolate, share the same base. They contain a little less protein per serving, since the flavouring and sweetener take up part of the weight, and a little more carbohydrate. They also still contain lactose, together with a lactase. In return, they can be drunk as they are, with a real taste.

Between chocolate and hazelnut, it is a matter of preference: hazelnut has a toasted note, chocolate a more classic cocoa profile. To compare all the versions, including vanilla, our whey isolate section brings them together with the other isolates we have selected.

How to prepare it and when to take it

Pour 200 ml of room-temperature water or plant-based milk into a shaker, add 30 g of powder, i.e. two scoops with the scoop provided, then shake for a few seconds. Nutripure indicates a range of 30 to 60 g a day, i.e. two to four scoops, to be adapted to the rest of your diet.

The brand suggests three moments. Breakfast, which is often low in protein when it comes down to a slice of bread and a coffee. A snack, to keep you going until the next meal. And right after training, when you cannot have a proper meal within the following half hour.

Chocolate also works well in smoothies: 200 ml of plant-based milk, a banana or half a mango, a serving of whey and a teaspoon of almond butter is one of the recipes suggested by Nutripure. It also goes well with fromage blanc or a cooled porridge. To take your serving to the office or the gym, in Paris or elsewhere, a glass shaker is easier to wash after a chocolate drink and does not keep the smell of cocoa.

Lactose, allergens and precautions

Milk is the main ingredient and the only allergen in the recipe. Unlike the unflavoured version, chocolate whey contains lactose: a lactase, an enzyme involved in breaking down lactose, is added, but Nutripure states that this version is not suitable for people who are lactose intolerant. Nor is it suitable for people with a milk protein allergy.

Traces of gluten, eggs, soy, fish and celery are possible, as the facility handles other raw materials. If you have an allergy, always read the label of the pouch you are holding.

A protein powder complements your diet; it does not replace varied and balanced meals. Close the zip of the pouch properly after each use and keep it in a dry place, away from heat. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under medical supervision, ask your doctor for advice.

Manufacturing, traceability and the brand

Nutripure is a French brand founded in 2017 by Christophe Carrio, five-time world champion in artistic karate and holder of a diploma in dietetics, together with his brother Florent, an engineer. The company is based in Haute-Garonne, near Toulouse, and manufactures in France.

The chocolate whey is developed and manufactured in line with the EN 17444 anti-doping standard, a European reference for athletes subject to testing. The brand offers a traceability sheet for its flavoured whey proteins as a download on its website. According to the ingredient list, the protein is of EU origin, and the product is suitable for a vegetarian diet.

It is this transparency that led us to stock Nutripure in our shop in Paris 12th, alongside other sports nutrition brands. For a more affordable everyday protein intake, the same brand also offers Muscle Protein.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference with the unflavoured Native Whey Isolate?

The base is the same native whey. The chocolate version also contains a natural cocoa flavouring, stevia and lactose, with a little less protein per serving: 22 g per 30 g, compared with more for the unflavoured version, which is also virtually lactose-free.

Does it contain sugar?

No sugar is added. The 1.6 g of sugars per 30 g serving are those naturally present in milk; the sweetness comes from stevia.

Can it be mixed into a hot drink?

Nutripure recommends preparing it with room-temperature water or a plant-based milk: that is how it mixes best. For a warm drink, let the liquid cool down rather than pouring the powder into a boiling drink, where it tends to form lumps.

Where can I find it in Paris?

Nutripure chocolate whey is listed at our shop in Paris 12th, 10 rue Théophile Roussel, between Ledru-Rollin (line 8) and Bastille (lines 1, 5, 8) metro stations. Its current availability is shown on this page. You can also browse our selection of whey and proteins.

Herba Barona’s tip — for a snack that tastes like milk chocolate, shake a serving of chocolate whey with 100 ml of water and 100 ml of well-chilled oat drink: half plant-based milk is enough to give it body without making it heavy.
