Stinging nettle, a plant of verges and gardens
Stinging nettle, Urtica dioica, grows almost everywhere in Europe: along paths and hedges, at the foot of old walls and in nitrogen-rich soil. This perennial reaches a metre and a half, with a square stem and finely toothed leaves. People used to pick the young shoots in spring, wearing gloves, for soups and fillings, just like spinach.
Its fine stinging bristles only sting on the fresh plant. Once dried or cooked, nettle loses that property entirely: the powder is handled like any other spice.
Leaves only, from organic farming
Nutripure uses only the leaves, the part most used in cooking, picked, dried and ground into a deep green powder. Ingredient: nettle leaf (Urtica dioica) from organic farming, with no additive, flow agent or flavouring. The bag carries the AB logo and the EU organic logo marked “EU Agriculture”; certification is checked by Ecocert.
The root is a different product altogether: we also stock organic nettle root in capsules by Dynveo, with its own composition. This leaf powder belongs first and foremost on the plate.
What nettle leaf powder contains
Per 100 g, the label shows 270 kcal, 48 g protein, 20 g fibre, 8 g carbohydrate of which 5 g sugars, 4 g fat and 1 g salt. That is down to the nature of the product: without the water, only the leaf’s concentrated dry matter remains.
Iron stands out: 97 mg per 100 g, so 4.9 mg per 5 g dose, 35% of the reference intake. The powder is therefore a source of iron, and iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal energy-yielding metabolism. A 5 g dose also provides 2.4 g of protein and 1 g of fibre: an addition to a varied diet, not a meal.
In the kitchen, and how much
The taste is distinctly green, somewhere between spinach and green tea. In a smoothie it pairs with banana, red berries, lemon and plant milk; in a soup, add it at the end, off the heat, as you would fresh herbs. It also works in a vinaigrette, over a salad, in an omelette or as an infusion (one dose for ten minutes in boiling water, then strain). Nutripure recommends 5 to 10 g a day, i.e. 1.5 to 3 scoops of 10 ml, ideally with meals or as a snack. The 150 g bag holds 30 doses of 5 g: a month at the lower dose, about two weeks at the higher one. If the taste is new to you, start with half a dose.
Precautions, storage, and our shop in Paris
Nutripure advises against the powder in cases of oedematous heart or kidney failure, for children under 12 and for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you are under medical supervision, ask your doctor before using it regularly. As it is very rich in iron, do not exceed 10 g a day, and count any iron supplement you already take. Once opened, close the bag tightly and keep it somewhere cool and dry.
Nutripure was founded in 2017 in Deyme, near Toulouse, by Christophe Carrio and his brother Florent, and makes its products in France. Herba Barona is a food supplement shop at 10 rue Théophile Roussel, Paris 12th, since 2006, open Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm, near Ledru-Rollin (line 8) and Bastille metro stations.
