The fruity version of Pure Granola
Nutripure makes its Pure Granola in three recipes: multigrain, chocolate and banana cashew. The brand describes the last one as the fruitiest of the three, with its pieces of banana and its cashew nuts. It is the one we chose, at Herba Barona in Paris, for those who like the taste of fruit at breakfast without wanting chocolate.
The principle is that of a homemade granola: a mixture of grains bound with date paste, then gently baked to form crunchy clusters. Here, the base is buckwheat, which makes up more than 60% of the recipe. Cashew nuts bring their slightly buttery roundness, dried banana a sweet, fragrant note.
The 350 g kraft pouch holds about seven 45 g servings. The label describes it as a “buckwheat, cashew and banana muesli, with added protein”. We received it in limited quantity for our shop in Paris 12th, alongside the other products of the Nutripure range.
Five organic ingredients, nothing more
The list fits on one line: buckwheat, date, cashew nuts, dried banana (dried banana and banana powder) and rice protein. All these ingredients come from organic farming, and the pouch carries the French AB logo and the European organic leaf. Nutripure publishes its organic certificate on its website.
What is not on the list matters too: no added oil, no flavouring, no preservative, no refined sugar. The sweet taste comes from the date, which also binds the grains together, and from the banana. The label states 19 g of sugars per 100 g: these are the sugars naturally present in these fruits.
The recipe contains no ingredient of animal origin: it is suitable for people who follow a vegan diet. It is also naturally gluten-free, as the label states, since buckwheat is not a gluten cereal and no oat or wheat flakes go into the recipe.
Buckwheat, a seed rather than a cereal
Despite its name, buckwheat has nothing to do with wheat. It is the seed of a plant from the same family as sorrel and rhubarb, long grown in Brittany for its famous savoury crêpes. It contains no gluten, which makes it an ideal base for a granola that does without it.
In Pure Granola, the buckwheat grains are used whole. Once baked, they take on a crunchy texture and a lightly toasted taste, close to hazelnut, which goes well with the sweetness of the banana. Nutripure states that it is baked at low temperature, like a homemade granola.
According to the label, it is made in a workshop in south-west France. Nutripure is a French brand founded in 2017 near Toulouse, in Haute-Garonne, by Christophe Carrio, five-time world champion in artistic karate with a background in dietetics, and his brother Florent, an engineer.
Banana and cashew: taste and texture
Cashew nuts make up almost 9% of the recipe, dried banana a little under 8%. The cashew is the most tender of nuts: it stays soft under the tooth and mellows the taste of the buckwheat. The banana comes in two forms, as pieces and as powder, which flavours the whole mix and not just a few mouthfuls.
Bear in mind that dried banana is firm. Some of the brand’s customers find the pieces hard to bite when the granola is eaten on its own. Nutripure then suggests letting the granola soak for a few minutes in milk, plant drink or yoghurt: the dried fruit softens, while the buckwheat clusters stay crunchy.
The result is a granola that tastes only lightly sweet, closer to a crunchy muesli than to a sugar-coated supermarket cereal. Lovers of bold flavours can add a sliced fresh banana or a few red berries.
What the label says, in figures
According to the label on the pouch, a 45 g serving provides 169 kcal, 5 g of protein, 2.2 g of fibre and 2.9 g of fat. Per 100 g, there are 12 g of protein and 4.9 g of fibre. The table published on the brand’s website, reproduced in the Composition tab of this page, gives similar values.
With more than 3 g of fibre per 100 g, this granola meets the European definition of a food that is a “source of fibre”. Protein provides a little over 12% of its energy, the threshold set for a food that is a “source of protein”. It comes from the buckwheat, the cashew nuts and the rice protein added by Nutripure.
Salt stays very low, at 0.05 g per 100 g. This granola is a breakfast or snack food, to be included in a varied and balanced diet, like any other cereal product.
Indulgent bowl or sporty bowl
The label suggests two ways of serving it. The indulgent version: 45 g of Pure Granola in 250 ml of plant drink, almond, oat or rice according to taste. Cow’s milk, a plain yoghurt or a skyr work just as well if you are not vegan.
The sporty version adds 30 g of whey isolate to the plant drink, for example Nutripure Native Whey Isolate, before pouring in the granola. To keep the recipe entirely plant-based, Nutripure Organic Plant Protein plays the same role in the bowl.
This granola also fits in a lunch box for a mid-morning break at the office, in Paris or anywhere else, as a topping on a fruit compote or fromage blanc, or in a bag before a hike. In our shop in Paris 12th, we suggest adding a handful of seeds or fresh fruit to vary the textures from one day to the next. The other products for exercise are gathered in our sport and endurance section.
Allergens and storage
The cashew is a tree nut, one of the fourteen allergens that must be declared: this granola is therefore not suitable for people allergic to nuts. The label also mentions possible traces of other nuts, peanuts and sesame. If you have an allergy, always read the label on the pouch.
Keep the pouch in a cool, dry place. Once it is open, Nutripure recommends transferring the granola to an airtight container, a glass jar for example: the buckwheat stays crunchy as long as it is kept away from moisture. The best-before date and the batch number are printed at the bottom of the pouch.
In our shop in Paris, Pure Granola joins the other foods of the Nutripure range, such as organic sweet potato flour. Nutripure products are sold at the shop only, at 10 rue Théophile Roussel, or by ordering on this website for collection in store.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pure Granola Banana Cashew gluten-free?
Yes. Its base is buckwheat, a gluten-free seed, and the recipe contains neither oats nor wheat. The label presents it as naturally gluten-free.
Does it contain added sugar?
It contains no refined sugar: the sweetness comes from the date, which binds the grains, and from the dried banana. The label states 19 g of sugars per 100 g, coming from these fruits.
Is it suitable for vegans?
Yes, its five ingredients are organic and of plant origin. Serve it with a plant drink or a plant-based yoghurt for an entirely plant-based breakfast.
Where can I buy Pure Granola Banana Cashew in Paris?
At Herba Barona, 10 rue Théophile Roussel, in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, two minutes from Ledru-Rollin metro station. It is sold only at the shop, or by ordering on this website for collection in store, while stock shown on this page lasts.
Herba Barona’s tip — if you find the banana pieces too firm, pour the plant drink or the yoghurt over the granola, then wait five minutes before starting: the dried banana softens, the buckwheat stays crunchy. For the “sporty” version on the label, a whey isolate is added to the drink; you will find them in our whey isolate section.
