Rhodiola in Paris: Where to Buy the Best Rhodiola in 2026
Rhodiola in Paris: why this adaptogen has become a must-have
Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) has become one of the most sought-after supplements in Paris. This adaptogen, native to arctic and mountainous regions, helps the body cope with physical and mental stress. At Herba Barona, in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, rhodiola has been one of our best-selling products for several years.
But with dozens of options on the market, how do you choose a quality rhodiola? What criteria should you look at? And most importantly, where can you buy it in Paris with genuine expert advice? This guide gives you all the answers.
How does rhodiola act on stress?
Rhodiola is classified as an adaptogenic plant, a concept defined by Russian pharmacologist Nikolai Lazarev in the 1940s. An adaptogen helps the body adapt to different forms of stress without a harsh stimulant effect or sedation.
Rhodiola’s main active compounds are:
- Rosavins (rosavin, rosin, rosarin): phenolic compounds specific to Rhodiola rosea, responsible for its adaptogenic action. A quality extract should be standardised to at least 3% rosavins
- Salidroside: a glycoside with neuroprotective properties. A minimum standardisation of 1% is recommended
Rhodiola acts on several biological pathways at once: it helps modulate cortisol (the stress hormone), supports serotonin and dopamine production (the neurotransmitters of wellbeing and motivation), and protects cells against oxidative stress.
The 5 criteria for choosing a good rhodiola
Not all rhodiola products are equal. Here are the criteria we check at Herba Barona before listing a product:
1. Rosavin and salidroside content
This is the number one criterion. Clinical studies have used extracts standardised to 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside (a 3:1 ratio). This is the root’s natural ratio. A product that doesn’t state its standardisation should be viewed with suspicion.
2. The botanical species
Only Rhodiola rosea contains rosavins. Other species (Rhodiola crenulata, Rhodiola sacra) only contain salidroside. Check the botanical name on the label.
3. Origin and traceability
Wild rhodiola is at risk of overharvesting. Choose extracts from controlled cultivation with full traceability.
4. Extraction method
A hydroalcoholic or water-based extraction preserves active compounds better. “Full spectrum” extracts retain the entire range of synergistic compounds.
5. No unnecessary excipients
Magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, maltodextrin… these additives add nothing of value. The best products contain only the extract and a plant-based capsule shell.

Rhodiola vs ashwagandha: which one should you choose?
This is the question we’re asked most often in our Paris shop:

|---|---|---|
| Effect | Energising, cognitively stimulating | Calming, relaxing |
| Best time | Morning | Evening |
| Best for | Fatigue + stress + energy needs | Stress + anxiety + sleep issues |
The two can be combined: rhodiola in the morning, Ashwagandha KSM-66 in the evening.
