Buy Breton Lithothamnium: natural marine calcium
Breton Lithothamnium (Lithothamnium calcareum) is a small calcareous red algae harvested off the coast of Brittany, naturally rich in marine calcium, magnesium and trace elements. Available at our Paris shop, with Click & Collect and delivery across France and Europe.
A naturally concentrated marine mineral source
Lithothamnium grows slowly on Brittany’s rocky sea floor, 5–30 metres deep, accumulating calcium carbonate and other minerals directly from seawater. Its calcium content can reach 30–34% of dry weight, one of the most concentrated natural calcium sources in the plant world. Unlike synthetic calcium, it comes in a natural mineral matrix alongside magnesium, iron, manganese and silicon, supporting good absorption. Each capsule contains 500mg of Breton lithothamnium; 5 capsules a day provide 800mg calcium (100% NRV) and 65mg magnesium (17% NRV).
Bone health & alkalising effect
Around 99% of the body’s calcium is stored in bones and teeth. Adequate calcium intake throughout life is essential for a strong skeleton, and many people don’t reach recommended intakes through diet alone. Lithothamnium’s marine calcium, with magnesium and trace elements, contributes to the maintenance of normal bones (an EFSA-authorised claim). It also has a natural alkalising effect, helping buffer the acid load of modern diets without the body drawing on its own bone calcium reserves.
Sustainable harvesting from Brittany
Only dead maërl (lithothamnium fragments naturally detached from the seabed) is collected, under strict French regulation, preserving living maërl beds and the marine ecosystem. It’s then washed, dried and milled with no solvents or chemical additives, and manufactured by Vecteur Santé, a French lab, with rigorous quality control on calcium content, microbiological purity and heavy metals.
How to use & precautions
Take 2 to 5 capsules a day with meals and a large glass of water. 5 capsules provide 800mg calcium (100% NRV); 2–3 capsules a day suit regular maintenance. A course of 2–3 months is generally recommended, renewable after a one-month break. Pairs well with vitamin D and marine magnesium.
Frequently asked questions
Is lithothamnium calcium better absorbed than synthetic calcium?
Its natural mineral matrix, with magnesium and trace elements, supports good absorption compared with isolated calcium forms like synthetic calcium carbonate.
Is it suitable for lactose-intolerant people?
Yes — it’s an entirely plant/marine-based calcium source with no lactose or dairy.
Can I combine it with vitamin D?
Yes, vitamin D supports intestinal calcium absorption, making the combination especially useful in winter.
