Pure Granola, the chocolate version
Pure Granola is the house granola of Nutripure, the French nutrition brand founded in 2017 near Toulouse. Its base stays the same from one flavour to the next: toasted buckwheat, dates and rice protein. The chocolate version adds dark chocolate chips and a little almond, which makes it the most indulgent of the range.
In the bowl, the buckwheat is easy to recognise: small, angular, golden and very crunchy grains, gathered into irregular clusters by the date paste. The dark chocolate chips, which make up 11% of the recipe, are spread through these clusters and melt slightly in a warm drink. The taste remains that of dark chocolate, more cocoa than sugar.
On the label, Nutripure calls it a “buckwheat and chocolate muesli, high-protein recipe”. It is a breakfast food, not a food supplement: it replaces a bowl of ordinary cereal and is eaten with a spoon, with a plant-based drink, a yoghurt or simply on its own.
Five organic ingredients, nothing else
The list fits on one line: buckwheat (55.4%), dates, dark chocolate chips (cocoa mass, cane sugar, cocoa butter), rice protein and almond. All the ingredients come from organic farming, and Granola Chocolat appears by name on Nutripure’s organic certificate issued by Ecocert. The pouch carries the French AB logo and the EU organic leaf.
There is no added oil, no syrup, no preservative and no flavouring. The sweetness comes from two sources: dates, which also act as the binder instead of the honey or maple syrup found in many granolas, and the dark chocolate itself. It is the only flavour in the range that contains added sugar, the sugar in the chips: cane sugar is part of the chocolate recipe.
The chocolate used contains only three ingredients, cocoa mass, cane sugar and cocoa butter, with no milk and no lecithin. That is what keeps the granola entirely plant-based. As for allergens, almond is a tree nut, and Nutripure states possible traces of other nuts, peanuts and sesame.
Buckwheat, a seed that is not a cereal
Despite its French nickname of “black wheat”, buckwheat has nothing to do with wheat. It belongs to the same plant family as sorrel and rhubarb, and its seed is eaten like a cereal: it is called a pseudo-cereal. It contains no gluten, which is why Pure Granola is gluten-free even though it looks like any other granola.
In Brittany it is best known as flour, for savoury galettes. In Eastern Europe, kasha made from roasted buckwheat is an everyday dish. In a granola, its hulled and toasted seeds bring a clean crunch, drier than that of oat flakes, and a light roasted-hazelnut taste that pairs well with cocoa.
Nutripure states that it is baked at low temperature, in a small-batch workshop in south-west France. The result is a granola low in fat, which does not stick to the fingers and keeps its texture in plant milk. For anyone avoiding gluten by choice or by necessity, it is an alternative to oat-based mueslis, provided you check the pouch label in case of allergy.
Nutrition at a glance
With 15 g of protein per 100 g, Pure Granola Chocolate is a source of protein: a 45 g serving provides about 7 g, before you even add a drink or a yoghurt. This protein comes from the buckwheat and from the rice protein added to the recipe. It is also a source of fibre, thanks to the buckwheat and the dates.
A 350 g pouch is about seven 45 g servings, the amount recommended by Nutripure. The sugars come from the dates and the dark chocolate; there is a little more of them than in the other flavours of the range, which is logical for a chocolate version. The full table, with minerals, vitamins and amino acids, is in the Composition tab of this page.
Granola remains an energy-dense food, around 382 kcal per 100 g, like most granolas. The recommended 45 g serving, with a plant-based drink, makes a complete breakfast. Our advisers at the shop in Paris 12th arrondissement suggest weighing the first serving: you quickly see that 45 g fills a bowl nicely.
How to enjoy it
Nutripure suggests two ways to serve it. The indulgent version: 45 g of granola with 250 ml of plant-based drink, almond, oat or rice as you prefer. The sporty version: the same 45 g with 250 ml of plant-based drink into which 30 g of whey isolate has been mixed. With an unflavoured whey, the chocolate in the granola is enough to flavour the whole bowl.
Chocolate lends itself to many other pairings. On a plant-based yoghurt or a skyr with a few slices of banana, it makes a quick dessert. With a pear or raspberries, it recalls a chocolate tart. The clusters can also be eaten plain, by the handful, as an afternoon snack or slipped into a gym bag, since the buckwheat does not crumble.
For a warm bowl in winter, pour a warm plant-based drink over the granola: the chips half melt and give a hot-chocolate taste. Avoid baking it or cooking it in a pan, however, as it would lose its crunch. Many of our customers in Paris keep a pouch at the office instead of the morning pastry.
Storing it well
The kraft pouch should be kept in a cool, dry place away from light. Heat is the enemy of the chocolate chips, which could turn white or soften: avoid the top of the fridge, the area near the oven or a sunny windowsill. In summer, a cool cupboard is enough.
Once opened, Nutripure recommends transferring the granola to an airtight container, such as a glass jar. Toasted buckwheat quickly takes up moisture from the air; in a well-closed jar it stays crunchy down to the last serving. The best-before date and the batch number are printed at the bottom of the pouch.
If a few clusters have settled at the bottom of the pouch, they taste just the same: they are simply finer pieces, perfect for sprinkling over a yoghurt or a fruit compote. At our shop in Paris 12th arrondissement, we keep Pure Granola with the rest of the Nutripure range, away from the shop window.
Nutripure and the Pure Granola range
Nutripure was founded in 2017 by Christophe Carrio, five-time world champion in artistic karate and a qualified dietitian, and his brother Florent, an engineer. The brand is based in Haute-Garonne, near Toulouse, and favours short recipes, made in France, with ingredients whose origin is stated.
Pure Granola comes in three flavours: multigrain, banana cashew and chocolate. All three share the same base of buckwheat, dates and rice protein; the chocolate one stands out with its dark chocolate chips and its almond, and it is the only one to contain a little added sugar. All the available flavours are grouped in our Nutripure section.
To round off a high-protein breakfast, the brand readily pairs the granola with its native whey isolate. Those who prefer to stay with an entirely plant-based recipe will find plant protein powders in our shop in Paris. And for lovers of pure cocoa, our cocoa beans, powder and butter section takes the experience further.
Frequently asked questions
Does Pure Granola Chocolate contain added sugar?
Yes, only the sugar in the dark chocolate chips, which contain cane sugar. The rest of the sweetness comes from the dates. There is no syrup, no honey and no sweetener.
Is it gluten-free and vegan?
Yes. Buckwheat contains no gluten and the recipe has no animal ingredient: the dark chocolate is made of cocoa mass, cane sugar and cocoa butter, with no milk. It contains almond and may contain traces of other nuts, peanuts and sesame.
How many servings are there in a 350 g pouch?
About seven 45 g servings, the amount Nutripure recommends for one bowl, with 250 ml of plant-based drink.
Where can I buy it in Paris?
At our shop in Paris 12th arrondissement, 10 rue Théophile Roussel, near the Ledru-Rollin (line 8) and Bastille (lines 1, 5, 8) metro stations, Tuesday to Saturday. You can also order it on this page and collect it in store. Stock is limited: the quantity available is shown on this page.
Herba Barona’s tip — to keep the crunch down to the last spoonful, pour in the plant-based drink at the very last moment, or do the opposite: granola in the bowl first, then just a drizzle of drink on top. The chocolate chips stay whole and the buckwheat does not go soft.
