A plant from Central and South America
Chrysanthellum americanum is an annual herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family, native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, also found in West Africa where it is used in local traditional medicine. It is the aerial parts (stems, leaves and flowers) that are used in herbal medicine, being rich in flavonoids, including quercetin, and saponins (chrysanthellines).
Support for blood circulation
Chrysanthellum’s action on blood circulation is one of its most recognised herbal uses. The plant’s flavonoids strengthen the walls of the smallest blood vessels, helping to reduce vascular fragility and support normal venous return — appreciated by people who experience heavy legs, especially in hot weather or after standing for long periods.
Support for liver health
The plant’s specific saponins, chrysanthellines, exert a protective action on liver cells, supporting their regeneration and the liver’s detoxifying functions. Chrysanthellum also contributes to regulating bile secretion, easing the digestion of dietary fats. In herbal medicine it is often combined with other liver-supporting plants such as artichoke, milk thistle or desmodium.
How to use & precautions
Take 3 to 6 capsules a day, spread across meals, starting with the lower dose and increasing gradually if needed. A 100-capsule bottle lasts around 16 to 33 days depending on dose. Courses generally last one to three months, renewable as needed.
For adults only. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women without medical advice. If taking anticoagulants or liver-related medication, consult a healthcare professional before use.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to take chrysanthellum?
It can be taken at any time of year, though summer (heavy legs from heat) and spring (seasonal liver-support courses) are particularly suited to it.
Can chrysanthellum be combined with other plants?
Yes — for circulation it pairs well with red vine, horse chestnut or witch hazel; for liver support, with artichoke, black radish or milk thistle. Our team at Herba Barona can advise on the best combination for your needs.
