Whey Protein Isolate Caramel AlpenPower in Paris: 90% protein, almost lactose-free

Native whey protein isolate from Alpine milk, cold filtered, no synthetic sweeteners. Available in Paris at Herba Barona.

What this tub contains

One kilogram of native whey protein isolate, around thirty-three servings of thirty grams. The powder contains 90 g of protein per 100 g – one of the highest concentrations achievable in a milk protein.

The rest is lean: 1.4 g of fat and 0.7 g of carbohydrates per hundred grams, of which 0.7 g sugars. A thirty-gram serving provides around 27 g of protein for 112 kcal.

The caramel flavour is one of the most recent additions to the isolate range. It stays subtle: without synthetic sweeteners, the taste cannot be as pronounced as classic powders on the market. It is a discreet caramel, not a confectionery note.

What «native isolate» means

Two words, two different pieces of information.

Isolate denotes the degree of purification. The whey undergoes intensive filtration that removes most of the fat and lactose. This takes protein from 79% in a concentrate to around 90% in an isolate.

Native denotes the origin. Most whey on the market comes from cheese-dairy whey, a by-product. A native whey is extracted directly from milk, without going through the cheese-making step. The milk has therefore undergone neither curdling nor acidification, which better preserves the delicate protein fractions.

This dual characteristic explains the price: the process is longer and the yield lower.

Milk from Austrian Alpine pastures

AlpenPower is an Austrian brand based in Schärding, Upper Austria, a few kilometres from the Bavarian border. The company Indiko GmbH has spent years developing a protein range built on a simple principle: as few steps as possible between milk and tub.

The milk comes from cows raised on pasture in the Alps, between Austria, Bavaria and South Tyrol. This origin is not just a marketing point: it determines the whey profile, which is richer when the animals graze on fresh Alpine grass for much of the year.

The brand has made a rare choice in the world of sports proteins: no synthetic sweeteners, no artificial flavours. The flavours come from real organic ingredients (cocoa, coconut, caramel), giving powders a more subtle taste than the market average, but without the aftertaste of intense sweeteners.

Who this isolate makes sense for

Three situations really justify it.

Digestion. This is the most common reason. If dairy products cause you bloating, the residual lactose content in the isolate – on the order of a few tenths of a gram per serving – is generally well tolerated.

Protein-to-calorie ratio. For the same protein intake, the isolate provides less fat and carbohydrates. This matters during periods when you are watching total energy intake.

Density. A more concentrated serving means less powder for the same amount of protein, hence a lighter drink that’s easier to digest.

Outside these cases, the organic concentrate from the same brand serves the same purpose for a lower price.

How to use it

A serving is prepared with 250 to 300 ml of water or plant-based drink. The isolate dissolves very well: its low fat content gives it a more fluid texture than a concentrate, almost like a drink.

The timing of intake matters less than is often said. What counts is the total over the day, spread across several servings. After a workout, as an afternoon snack or at breakfast: all three work.

As for quantities, the usual benchmarks are around 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for an active person, counting the whole diet. The powder supplements, it does not replace.

Certifications and controls

Two certifications appear on the tubs: the European organic logo (the starred leaf) and the Austrian organic seal. The former requires a specification common to the whole Union: no synthetic pesticides in animal feed, no GMOs, no preventive antibiotics.

The term Weidekühe – pasture cows – refers to a farming method where animals spend the good season outdoors, on Alpine pastures. In practice, this means a grass-based diet rather than concentrates, which is reflected in the milk’s composition.

Every batch has a laboratory analysis certificate, available on request. We can send it to you if you want to verify a specific point – protein content, absence of contaminants, amino acid profile.

Frequently asked questions

Isolate or concentrate: is the difference really noticeable?

In digestive terms, yes, for people sensitive to lactose. In terms of training results, the difference is marginal if total protein intake is the same. The isolate isn’t absolutely «better», it’s purer.

Why does it cost more?

The filtration process is longer and the yield lower: more milk is needed to get a kilo of powder. Added to this is the native character, which requires taking the protein directly from milk rather than from a cheese-dairy by-product.

How long does a tub keep once opened?

About three months under good conditions: tub well sealed, protected from moisture and light, at room temperature. The powder’s main enemy is humidity, which makes it clump. Avoid storing it above a stove or near a sink.

Do you need a special shaker?

A standard shaker is enough. Always pour the liquid before the powder, never the other way round: otherwise the powder sticks to the bottom and forms a lump that’s hard to dissolve. Twenty seconds of shaking is enough.

Can it be used other than as a drink?

Yes, and it’s actually a good use for the natural version. It can be mixed into yoghurt, porridge, pancake batter or a smoothie. Be careful with cooking though: above seventy degrees, the proteins coagulate and the texture changes.
