Unlike L-arginine, which is largely broken down by intestinal and liver enzymes during absorption, L-citrulline largely escapes this breakdown and is converted into L-arginine by the kidneys. This indirect route produces higher and more stable plasma L-arginine levels than direct arginine supplementation.

There are two main forms of citrulline on the market: L-citrulline base, the pure amino acid on its own, and citrulline malate, a combination of L-citrulline and malic acid (usually 2:1). Malate is the more studied form in sports-nutrition trials, but the base form delivers a more concentrated dose of pure citrulline per capsule.

Watermelon is the richest dietary source of L-citrulline — with the white rind even richer than the red flesh — followed by other cucurbits such as melon, cucumber and pumpkin, and some legumes like chickpeas. Dietary amounts remain well below supplemental doses, which is why supplementation appeals to those wanting a meaningful intake.

Take with a large glass of water. Athletes often take it 30–60 minutes before training; for general use, capsules can be taken with meals.
