Psyllium: Husk, Powder or Capsules, How to Take It

Published on 27/10/26 · Herba Barona, Paris 12

Psyllium blond tégument, poudre extra fine bio et gélules Nature et Partage, Herba Barona Paris 12e

Psyllium is one of those products people ask us for without knowing which to choose: husk, fine powder or capsules? And above all, how do you drink it without ending up with a glass of gel? At Herba Barona, in Paris’s 12th arrondissement, we stock all three forms, and we explain the same thing every day: psyllium is simple to use, as long as you follow two or three rules. The full range is on our psyllium in Paris page.

Blond psyllium husk, organic extra-fine powder and Nature et Partage capsules, Herba Barona Paris 12th
Husk, fine powder or capsules: the same husk, three uses.

What exactly is psyllium?

Blond psyllium, also called ispaghula, is a small plantain grown mainly in India (Plantago ovata). What we buy isn’t the whole seed but its husk, the very thin coating around it. This husk is rich in mucilage, plant fibres that swell with water and form a soft gel. It’s this gel that gives psyllium its distinctive character, and it’s what sets rule number one: always plenty of liquid.

Don’t confuse it with black psyllium, a Mediterranean species with less mucilage, or with whole seeds, which don’t behave the same way in water. All three products on our shelf are based on blond psyllium husk.

Husk, fine powder or capsules: which to choose?

All three forms start from the same material. What changes is how you use it.

Husk is the classic form. It’s mixed into a large glass of water, juice or herbal tea, or into a fruit compote. It’s the most economical format for everyday use. The Nature et Partage blond psyllium husk is 100% husk, with no additive, in a 300 g kraft bag.

Extra-fine powder is the same husk, ground into a very soft flour. It disperses without leaving small flakes, which makes it the preferred form for cooking. Our organic extra-fine psyllium powder is certified organic.

Capsules avoid any preparation: no glass to mix, no texture. They’re handy at the office or when travelling. The 500 mg organic psyllium capsules are taken two at a time, with a large glass of water. They do, however, provide smaller amounts than a spoonful of husk.

How to take it without ending up with gel

This is the question we’re asked most often, and the answer comes down to four steps:

  • A large glass of liquid for each dose, followed by a second glass straight after.
  • Mix and drink right away. The gel starts to set within a few minutes.
  • Rinse the glass with a little water and drink that too: some of the psyllium stays stuck to the sides.
  • Start small. One teaspoon a day for the first few days, then increase in steps if you wish, without exceeding the dose stated on the packaging.

If the taste of plain water puts you off, use fruit juice or compote instead: psyllium has almost no taste, it’s mainly its texture that surprises people.

What time of day?

There’s no right or wrong time: morning, midday or evening, what matters is regularity and the amount of water. Many of our customers take it at breakfast, in a glass of juice, because that’s when they remember to drink.

One precaution appears on every packet: take psyllium apart from your medication, so you don’t mix them in the same glass or at the same time. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

Psyllium in the kitchen

Psyllium has a second life in gluten-free cooking. Gluten-free flours lack binding power: the dough breaks, the crumb falls apart. A small amount of psyllium powder provides the structure that’s missing, and the bread becomes softer. It also helps roll out a tart or pizza dough without it tearing.

The method is always the same: mix the powder with the dry ingredients (flour, salt, yeast) before adding the water. Poured alone into water, it immediately forms lumps. A little powder also thickens a soup or a sauce, without starch. If you cook with little flour, our keto shelf will give you other ideas.

Psyllium or acacia fibre?

Both are soluble fibres, but they behave differently. Psyllium thickens and forms a gel. Acacia fibre dissolves almost without changing the texture of the drink, which makes it easier to drink. Some customers alternate between the two. Both are kept with our other products in the digestion and transit shelf.

Frequently asked questions

How much water is needed with psyllium?

At least one large glass per dose, followed by a second. Psyllium needs liquid to swell: without water, there’s no point taking it.

Can psyllium be added to yoghurt?

Yes, into a yoghurt, a compote or a soup. Simply drink a large glass of water right after.

Is psyllium gluten-free?

Psyllium husk contains no gluten, and all three of our products are labelled gluten-free. That’s actually why it’s so widely used in gluten-free baking.

How long does an opened bag keep?

Close it well and keep it somewhere dry, away from heat. Moisture is its enemy: a damp spoon dipped into the bag is enough to cause lumps.

Can’t decide between two forms? Come and see us at 10 rue Théophile Roussel, Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30am to 6:30pm: we’ll show you all three side by side.
