Dietary Supplements: The Beginner’s Guide

Published on 12/07/26 · Herba Barona, Paris 12

Standing in front of a supplement aisle, it’s easy to feel lost: capsules, powders, drops, dosages, forms… Where do you even start? Here’s a simple guide to help you make the right choices and avoid the classic pitfalls. 🌿

A supplement complements (it doesn’t replace)

It’s the golden rule: a dietary supplement is there to complement an already varied diet — it doesn’t replace it. Real food remains the foundation — vegetables, quality protein, healthy fats, seasonal produce. A supplement is a targeted boost, for a specific need or a particular period (winter, an intense pace of life, a special diet).

Another simple principle: start small. There’s no need to stack ten products at once. It’s better to target one or two needs, choose quality products, and observe how you respond. If you’re on medication or have any doubts, asking a healthcare professional is always the right move.

How to choose well: learning to read the label

Two products with the same name can be very different. The secret is knowing what actually matters:

How to read a dietary supplement label.
What to check Why it matters
The active ingredient and its form Not all forms are equal (e.g. magnesium bisglycinate is generally better tolerated than the oxide form).
The dosage per serving This is the real way to compare two products, capsule for capsule.
Certifications (organic, Ecocert…) A marker of quality and growing practices.
The list of excipients The fewer there are (dyes, additives), the cleaner the formula.
Origin and brand A sign of traceability and manufacturer reliability.

🧠 Supplements: true or false?

Click to check your answers.

1. A supplement can replace a meal.

False. A supplement complements a varied diet — it never replaces it. Real food remains the foundation.

2. The higher the dosage shown, the better.

False. What matters is the right dosage for the need — and a well-absorbed form. More isn’t necessarily better.

3. The form of a mineral affects how well it’s absorbed.

True. For example, magnesium bisglycinate is generally better tolerated than the oxide form. The form really does make a difference.

4. “Organic” automatically means “no additives at all”.

False. The organic label refers to growing practices. For additives, you need to read the list of excipients — the two don’t always overlap.

5. You can start with several supplements at once.

False (not recommended). It’s better to start with one or two, observe, then adjust. Simpler to follow and easier to track.

Our tips for getting started

Three habits to start off on the right foot: target one or two needs rather than wanting everything at once; prioritise quality (an absorbable form, few excipients, a reputable brand) over the lowest price; and think consistency — most supplements are taken in cycles, over time. Always follow the stated doses, and don’t hesitate to ask for advice, especially if you’re on medication.

Did you know? In France, dietary supplements are classified as food products, regulated by the DGCCRF (the French consumer protection authority), not as medicines. They provide nutrients or plant extracts, but they are not a substitute for medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dietary supplement a medicine?

No. It’s a regulated food product intended to complement your diet. It replaces neither a balanced diet nor medical advice.

What time of day should you take them?

It depends on the product: some are taken with meals, others on an empty stomach. The label always specifies the recommended usage.

Can you take several at the same time?

It’s possible, but it’s best to start simply and ask for advice on combinations, to keep things clear and avoid overlap.

Where should a beginner start?

With a clearly identified need, a single quality product, and a bit of consistency. You can then adjust based on what you observe.
