Calcium: Where to Find It on Your Plate (Beyond Milk)

Published on 12/07/26 · Herba Barona, Paris 12

When people talk about calcium, they immediately think of a glass of milk. Yet a good share of our intake can come from elsewhere: seeds, leafy greens, small fish, mineral water… Here’s a quick guide to getting plenty of calcium, even without dairy. 🌱

What is calcium for?

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body: almost all of it is stored in the bones and teeth, whose normal function it helps maintain. It also plays a role in muscle contraction and the nervous system. Our needs change throughout life, and a varied diet covers most of them.

A key point that’s often overlooked: calcium needs vitamin D to be properly absorbed by the intestine. That’s why people often talk about the calcium–vitamin D duo, with the latter conducting the absorption process.

Where to find calcium on your plate?

Good news for those who don’t digest milk well: calcium sources are numerous and varied. Here are some of the top performers (indicative values):

Calcium content of selected foods (indicative values per 100 g).
Food Calcium (indicative) Good to know
Sesame seeds ≈ 975 mg Top performers across the board, as a paste (tahini) or sprinkled on food.
Sardines (with bones) ≈ 380 mg It’s the small, soft bones that provide the calcium.
Calcium-set tofu ≈ 350 mg Check for “calcium” on the label.
Almonds ≈ 265 mg A handful as a snack, or as almond butter.
Leafy greens (cabbage, broccoli) ≈ 100–250 mg Kale and broccoli are the most worthwhile.
Calcium-rich mineral water 150–500 mg / litre A simple way to top up, with no calories.

🦴 Calcium: true or false?

Click to check your answers.

1. Only dairy products provide calcium.

False. Sesame seeds, almonds, leafy greens, sardines and certain mineral waters are all excellent sources.

2. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium.

True. Without vitamin D, some of the calcium consumed is poorly absorbed by the intestine. The duo works hand in hand.

3. Sardine bones are a source of calcium.

True. The small, soft bones eaten along with canned sardines are precisely what’s rich in calcium.

4. Water can provide as much calcium as a food.

True. Some “calcium-rich” mineral waters provide 300 to 500 mg of calcium per litre, with zero calories.

5. Sesame seeds are richer in calcium than milk.

True. Weight for weight, whole sesame far exceeds milk — though it’s eaten in much smaller quantities.

Our tips for a good calcium intake

A few simple habits: favour variety over a single source, remember vitamin D (sunshine, oily fish, or a small boost in winter), and spread your intake across the day rather than all at once — calcium is better absorbed in moderate doses. A spoonful of sesame paste at breakfast, a handful of almonds as a snack, leafy greens at dinner: it adds up quickly.

Did you know? Lithothamnium is a red algae from the coast of Brittany which, as it mineralises, naturally builds up marine calcium. Ground into powder, it has long served as a plant- and marine-based source of calcium.

Frequently asked questions

Can you meet your calcium needs without milk?

Yes, with a varied diet rich in seeds, nuts, leafy greens, small fish and calcium-rich water. It’s more a matter of habits than of dairy products.

Why pair calcium with vitamin D?

Because vitamin D promotes the intestinal absorption of calcium. You need both to get the most out of either.

Is calcium from plants well absorbed?

It depends on the food: calcium from cabbage and broccoli is well absorbed, a little less so from spinach (which is rich in oxalates). Hence the value of varying your sources.

Should you take it in the morning or evening?

The time of day doesn’t really matter — what counts is spreading it out in moderate doses. Splitting it up optimises absorption.
