EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) is the main polyphenol in green tea, making up as much as 60% of total catechins. It is the most-researched molecule in green tea, with more than 10,000 published scientific studies on its biological effects.

Each Now Foods capsule delivers 400 mg of standardised green tea leaf extract, including 200 mg of pure EGCG — a dose far higher than what’s naturally found in a cup of green tea (30-100 mg depending on preparation), which is why it’s of interest for targeted supplementation. The 180-vegan-capsule bottle allows a six-month course at one capsule a day. The formula is GMO-free, gluten-free, soy-free and vegan, in line with the Now Foods specification.

EGCG is one of the most powerful antioxidants known today: its free-radical-scavenging capacity exceeds that of vitamin C and vitamin E, neutralising the free radicals responsible for oxidative stress and cellular ageing.

Beyond its antioxidant action, EGCG is studied for its role in metabolism: it stimulates thermogenesis (energy expenditure) and supports fat oxidation, which is why it appears in many weight-management formulas. Other studied effects include cardiovascular support (cholesterol, blood pressure), neuronal protection, and liver support. EGCG crosses the blood-brain barrier, making it of interest for brain health.

Many green tea extracts on the market are low-dose or poorly standardised. Now Foods EGCG is standardised to a minimum of 200 mg of pure EGCG per capsule, a high concentration rarely matched elsewhere. Each batch is independently lab-tested. The formula has no superfluous additives — just green tea leaf extract and a hypromellose vegetable capsule. No GMOs, no gluten, no soy, no animal gelatine, in line with the Now Foods purity policy. The capsule also protects EGCG from digestive oxidation, unlike a simple infusion or tablet extract, improving the active ingredient’s bioavailability.

The recommended dose is 1 capsule per day, ideally taken with a meal to improve absorption and limit any digestive discomfort. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach, as EGCG can be irritating for some people. EGCG naturally contains a little caffeine (about 5 mg per capsule, residual from extraction) — far less than a cup of coffee (80 mg) or green tea (30 mg), but very sensitive people may prefer to take it in the morning. The course can be taken continuously or in 2-3 month periods with breaks.

Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, people on anticoagulants, those with liver conditions, or children. Space out intake from iron supplements, as polyphenols reduce iron absorption.

What’s the difference with a standard green tea extract?

A standard green tea extract contains 30-50% mixed polyphenols. Now Foods EGCG is specifically standardised to 50% pure EGCG (200 mg per capsule), the most active and best-studied catechin.

Does EGCG contain caffeine?

Yes, but in very small amounts (about 5 mg per capsule, an extraction residue). No noticeable stimulant effect, but very sensitive people may prefer taking it in the morning.

Does EGCG really help with weight loss?
