Functional mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), nicknamed the “mushroom of immortality,” is rich in triterpenes and beta-glucans that help support the immune system. Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is studied for its effects on cognitive function and memory thanks to its erinacines. Cordyceps sinensis is traditionally associated with physical energy and endurance. Chaga (Inonotus obliquus), harvested from birch trees in northern forests, is rich in powerful antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase. Each of these mushrooms has a unique profile of polysaccharides and bioactive compounds.

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is one of the most widely consumed mushrooms in the world. It contains lentinan, a beta-glucan studied for its immune-supporting properties. Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is rich in D-fraction, a type of polysaccharide that helps support the body’s natural defences. Beta-glucans, present in all functional mushrooms, are soluble fibres that interact with the immune receptors in the gut. To be effective, mushroom extracts need to have a guaranteed level of polysaccharides and beta-glucans.
